Around the Grounds – Winter Netball Last Round Games – 30

Around the Grounds – Winter Netball Last Round Games – 30 August 2014

A fantastic spring day saw the end of the 2014 round series on Saturday.

This season, 235 Senior School players, 96 Junior School players, 34 teams, 53 student
mentor coaches and umpires, 32 adult coaches, 34 managers and 8 staff participated across
the Junior and Senior Schools. A feat in itself and one which is unparalleled for a single
Netball school or club across the ACT. Our participation base is a real strength of the school
so thanks to players, coaches, managers, umpires and parent supporters.

Out of 34 teams, apart for the 4 Net-Set-Go teams who finished their season today, we have
21 teams moving on to finals – what a great result for the season!

Well done to all teams, in particular, those teams who played their final games. Regardless
of the end result, teams have had excellent trainings, built combinations, improved their
skills, worked together with coaches and managers, developed friendships, and had many
memorable moments along the way. Winter Netball is more than just an opportunity to
participate in sport, it fosters teamsmanship, strength of character, school spirit and the
chance to work together to achieve a goal, no matter how big or small. We often feel a great
sense of pride at the capacity of our girls to learn, improve and be gracious in victory and
defeat. Their willingness to contribute and support others, be it by playing, coaching,
umpiring or scoring is commendable.
I would like to extend a special mention to a number of teams this season:

The Year 12 Senior Yellow finished their final game of the season today. The Yellows
certainly peaked during the second half of the season, just outside the top 4. Their
improvement across the season has been really pleasing and their longevity as a team unit
has also been first class! They are certainly the stalwarts of the Netball program. A special
thank you to Mrs Musgrove (coach), Gavin Lee (manager), Mrs Agnew and Amasha
Panagoda (umpires)
Senior Green fought commendably in Seniors Division 3 this season; the girls ensured that
their commitment to improvement and team camaraderie were of the highest order. Thanks
to Victoria Schmahl (coach) and Destiny Peris (umpire) for their support of the girls.
A determined group of enthusiast Netballers is one way of describing the Senior Orange
team, who finished with a great game in their final round. They have certainly improved in
this division across the season and were often a hard team to beat. Thanks to Amy Brown
(coach), Jenine Westerberg (manager), Di Glassock (scorer), Georgina Dickson and Hugh
Jorgenson (umpire) for all their support.
The 7 Thunderbirds team finished the season with an improved sense of their own
capabilities, including footwork, ball skills and game play. The spirit in which the girls played
week after week was exceptional and sets a fine example for all teams. Thanks to Katie
Roche-Freedman and Tash Anderson (coaches), Kate MacInnes and Sam Gedye (student
coaches and umpires) and Linda Ivatts (manager) for their support of the team.
The 7 Firebirds continue to improve with their strong team and are perhaps the quiet
achievers of the competition. Their commitment and enthusiasm has been excellent and I
know they will take away a great deal from the experience in this division next season. A big
thanks to Leigh Kalsbeek (coach), Charlotte Marshall (student coach/umpire) and Colin
McMaster (manager)
9 Rubies were perhaps one our most improved teams of the season, even moving up a
division at the start of the season. They can be very proud of their effort across the season

and narrowly missed out on a finals birth. A big thankyou to Sally Hatton (coach), Charlotte
Marshall (student umpire) and Nic Marsham (manager) for their support of the team each
week.
9 Jade fought valiantly week in, week out in Inters Div 3 and they actually had one of the
best goal percentages in the competition. They always enjoy playing with each other and we
look forward to seeing them back next season! Thanks to Grace Terry (coach) and Barb
Searle (manager).

We look forward to receiving a number of team reports and photos from coaches over the
coming weeks and hope to publish these in our weekly update.

There were a number of girls and coaches who have also umpired at different timeslots
across the season and have offered to fill in for a number of teams in the second half of the
year. I would like to especially thank Jess Baldwin, Maddie Mackie, Charlotte Marshall,
Brydie Hughes, Georgia Connery, Emma Teal, Eliza Blain, Destiny Peris, Nikki Karapanagos,
Jazmine Smith, Louise Daly, Michelle Firth, Michaela Bragg, Kara McKee, Amy Nolan,
Renae Marshall, Victoria Schmahl, Hugh Jorgenson, Britt Staniforth, Grace Underwood,
Delyse Paliaga, Tanya Rynne and Courtney Gorman.

The Junior Umpires Scheme (JUS) concluded on Saturday. Congratulations to the following
girls for their participation in this valuable scheme: Maddie Pik, Annabelle Mulcahy, Izzy
Fry, Lucy Burgess, Belle Hocking and Lizzie Abhayaratna.

The annual SCNA Volunteer Awards were also presented on Saturday with the following
CGGS volunteers recognised. We thank them for their on-going support of Netball at CGGS:
Georgia Connery (Young Umpire), Sue Johar (Senior Volunteer) and Colin McMaster
(Senior Volunteer).

Teams finishing up this week are now busy organising their end of season activity, teams
traditionally organise a lunch, dinner, afternoon tea, picnic or BBQ. Our Netball Captains will
also be organising a BBQ at school to celebrate the end of season and lead up to finals! Stay
tuned for more information.

The finals series continues across the next three Saturday’s. First plays second, with the
winner moving straight through to the grand final. The loser plays the winner of third and
fourth. The loser of third and fourth bows out.
