Stratford High serves as host site for BCSD Athletic Scholarship Signing Day

(GOOSE CREEK)- Stratford High School hosts Berkeley County School District’s (BCSD) Athletic
Scholarship Signing Day on Wednesday, February 1, in the auditorium as top student-athletes in the
Class of 2017 put pen to paper and officially join a college program of their choosing.
“The National Collegiate Athletic Association’s (NCAA) signing period for high school students opens
across the country each year with National Signing Day on the first Wednesday in February,” said
BCSD Athletics Coordinator Brian Roney. “This is an exciting day for our student-athletes who will be
celebrated for their achievements both on the field and in the classroom. We are looking forward to
celebrating the next-level futures of our students.”
According to the NCAA’s website, the National Letter of Intent program was created in 1964 by a group
of seven conferences. The original intent was to “to curb recruiting excesses that began when college
sports became a national endeavor with the increased television exposure of the late 1940s and early
1950s.” Today, the program is governed by the NCAA’s Eligibility Center and has expanded to more
than 600 participating Division I and Division II institutions.
