November 2011 Primary 1 Primary 1 have settled well into life at Colquhoun Park Primary School. I am very pleased with their progress and their enthusiasm towards their learning. If you or your child have any worries or niggles please let me know. Catch me at the end of the day or you can phone the office for an appointment. Phonics P1 have been working very hard with their phonics and I am very pleased to see the progress they are making in learning their sounds and letters. Thank you for your support in helping your child to learn these sounds. If you have internet access and would like additional ways for your child to practise their sounds, I have included a few websites overleaf which have some fun games. During this term, your child shall be moving on to sounds which are made from two letters (ee, ai, ea…) I shall continue to send home the sound sheets for each of these new sounds. If you require any replacements, please let me know and I will be happy to send these home too. Reading Thank you to those who were able to make the reading workshop, we were very pleased to see such a fantastic turnout! The children in P1 have now been issued with reading books. When your child comes home with a story, please try to read with them every day. Simply five minutes will really help your child develop their confidence and enthusiasm for reading. Writing P1 now have weekly writing sessions with Mrs Hunter, our Learning Support Teacher. The children are learning how to form words and sentences and learning to use finger spaces and full stops. Both Mrs Hunter and I are very impressed with the writing skills which the children already have. They are progressing very well! Maths Primary 1 are about to start using a resource called ‘Numicon’. This resource provides a shape for each of the numbers 1-10 and is an excellent way to help the children ‘see’ the numbers and what they represent. P1 are also beginning to adding within maths too! Interdisciplinary Learning (IDL) Primary 1, along with the whole school, are now moving on to a topic which is based on ‘Our Religious World’. The focus for this topic shall be ‘Festivals of Light’ and as such P1 shall be learning about the Jewish festival of Hanukkah and the Christian festival of Advent. Home Learning P1 have now handed in their first Home Learning and I was extremely pleased to see some of the great work that the children were doing. I hope that you also enjoyed these home learning tasks. The next issue of Home Learning is on its way. If you have any comments or feedback about how you found this home learning, please let me know! Thank you for your time, Miss Sarah Maclean.
