common sense approach to the proposal of adding fees and more

It appears that there are only a small number of landlords who
might be violating existing rules, and those violators can be dealt
with under the current ordinance. We suggest the City take a
serious look at the proposal being suggested by industry experts,
such as veteran Corvallis property manager Jerry Duerksen, who
proposes that the industry self-regulate, essentially eliminating the
need for a city inspection program.
Mr. Duerksen and others in his industry have outlined a plan that
seems fair and equitable and will not add undue costs and
burdensome rules to a system that is not broken but simply needs
some tweaking. After all, it is in their own self-interest to insure
that properties are safe, reasonably-priced and marketable.
Creating a mini-inspection bureaucracy that the city really can’t
afford, and charging unnecessary fees to pay for it, sends a
negative message to the wider world that Corvallis is a difficult
place in which to own property and do business.
We believe that allowing local industry leaders to develop a
reasonable plan with the City and OSU officials is the right
approach. We hope you see it that way as well.
Sincerely,
Kevin Dwyer,
Executive Director
