Cultural Heritage-makers competition

European Heritage Days 2015 –
Industrial and Technical Heritage
Cultural Heritage-makers competition
TELL THE STORY OF A PRODUCT!
Are you a Cultural Heritage-maker? Tell the story of an interesting product, share it across Europe and
win 500 euros for your group!
Kitchen paper, mobile phones, shoes, elevators, chocolate, bicycles, games, books, a piece of jewellery,
duvet covers, paper clips?
Industry and technology enter our lives through a vast array of articles and commodities. But where do
they all come from? Lots of brainstorming, designing, materials and production methods goes on behind
the products. Do you know who has designed the most important everyday item in your life? Where was it
made?
The Cultural Heritage-makers competition seeks to motivate children and young people to explore their
industrial heritage. All children and young people born in or after 1997 who live in Finland may enter the
competition. Contestants enter as a group that has at least two members. The competition is targeted at
day care centres, schools and educational institutes, associations, parishes, communities, clubs, cultural
institutions, children’s culture centres and other parties that organise children’s and youth activities.
Groups of friends and siblings are also welcome to participate. The Cultural Heritage-makers competition is
part of the Finnish programme of the European Heritage Days.
How to enter
1.
CHOOSE A PRODUCT
Find out which products are or have been manufactured near you. Don’t just limit yourself to your
hometown – search the rest of Finland, Europe and the world. A product that is important and familiar to
you could have been manufactured anywhere. Analyse the articles and commodities you use regularly and
try to determine which of them are the most important for you. Investigate the stories behind the products
to discover any surprising moments or phases in their history. Choose an industrially manufactured article,
commodity or product that you would like to know more about.
2.
FIND OUT THE PAST AND PRESENT MEANING OF THE PRODUCT
You can discuss, for example, the following:
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
Where, when and how was the product made?
What was the product developed for?
Who was involved in the design and manufacturing process?
What kinds of materials, skills, machinery, etc. were needed in the production?
Do you know any old or existing products that are similar?
How does the product differ from other similar products?
How and where can the product be used?
How and where do you use the product?
What does the product mean to you and what would your life be like without the product?
•
•
3.
What happens to the product when you no longer need it?
Could the product be used after you no longer need it?
TELL THE STORY OF YOUR PRODUCT
Tell the story of your product in your presentation, describing its life cycle from creation to how it became
part of your life. You can use, for example, photographs, text, drawings, paintings, video, animation or a
website you have designed to tell the story. You can combine different means of expression freely to
illustrate your story and convey it to others. If you want, you can familiarise yourselves with the local
industrial environments, professions and working methods as part of your entry. Document your
presentation in a format that can be uploaded onto the website.
4.
UPLOAD YOUR PRESENTATION ON THE EUROPEAN HERITAGE DAYS WEBSITE
Enter the competition by uploading your presentation on the open, pan-European
www.europeanheritagedays.com website. Each presentation uploaded on the page will appear as a star on
the map of Europe, marking the spot where the presentation was made. Because the competition is
