Racial Justice Facilitator Program
Information and Application
YWCA of Minneapolis
The YWCA of Minneapolis Mission
The mission of the YWCA of Minneapolis is to eliminate racism and empower women and girls. We are more than a gym. We
are part of a worldwide women’s movement in over 70 countries. We serve over 25,000 people in the local community and
strive everyday to achieve race and gender equity, economic independence for women, respect for diverse cultures, a place
where children and youth thrive, and a community that is vibrant and healthy. The YWCA of Minneapolis was founded in 1891
- we have 120 years of experience in being at the forefront of social change.
The Role of the Facilitator
YWCA Facilitators are committed to racial justice work. As an active member of the movement to promote positive race
relations, facilitators carry the responsibility of promoting a safe environment for all participants to share personal
experiences and opinions regarding the topics of race and racism. Facilitators will have multiple opportunities throughout the
year to engage various communities and groups in the Twin Cities in these dialogues, including YWCA workshops, community
conversations, and our annual It’s Time to Talk: Forums on Race event.
Facilitation Training
The time commitment is six hours and the cost is $100. There is no cost for the training if you are able to commit to
facilitating on Wednesday, October 17, 2012, at the 10th annual It’s Time to Talk. The training includes:

FT1: 4-hour Circle Process Training: In this session, you will learn how to use the ancient indigenous tradition of circle
dialogue with a group of individuals as a tool for discussing issues around race and diversity.

FT2: 2-hour Skills Training: Provides an opportunity to delve further into common dynamics encountered by
facilitators, current events, U.S. history, and to develop stronger facilitation skills.
Facilitator Certification
Level 1: Basic Circle Facilitation: You will be certified as a Level 1 facilitator upon completing the YWCA facilitator training (FT1
+ FT2), signing up for one additional learning opportunity on the YWCA facilitator training calendar, committing to facilitate at
It’s Time to Talk: Forums on Race and completing your facilitator action plan. Level 1 facilitators will receive additional training
opportunities and are welcome to take advantage of any/all opportunities. You can move to level 2 as desired, but it is not
required.
Level 2: Enhanced Circle Facilitation: Level 2 facilitators complete all components of level 1 with the increased commitment of
two additional learning opportunities in a calendar year. Level 2 facilitators must receive strong evaluative remarks from
three dialogues before receiving certification.
The YWCA of Minneapolis promises to continually provide performance feedback, resources, learning opportunities, and
volunteer opportunities for certified facilitators. Some dialogues may require only Level 2 facilitators, while others will be
open to all interested facilitators.
