Whakarewarewa School Newsletter Panui 4 Friday 21 March 2014 st Roll 59 Tena koutou katoa nga matua me nga kaitiaki o te kura nei. He mihi aroha ki a ratou e pouri ana, e mamae ana. Ki a ratou kua mene ki te po, haere haere, haere atu ra. Heoi ano, ki te hunga ora tena tatou katoa. It has been a quiet week 8 with students and staff concentrating on their learning, their values and the way we are at school. It’s always sad when students leave the school and move to another city. Aue. Kia kaha everyone to let others in Rotorua know that we have a beautiful school doing focussed on lifting student achievement in a happy safe learning place. A time to celebrate student achievement NZ schools have to assess students in reading, writing and maths against the National Standards and last year against nga Whanaketanga We assessed students in July and Dec of 2013 and it’s time to celebrate. These students progressed through the year and are where they should be for their age and year level compared to others in the country. They have progressed one whole year. Yay! They worked diligently and progressed steadily and I commend them, their teachers and their whanau for achieving this outcome. Well done and congratulations to: In reading and panuitanga Heretini, Amokura, Drey, Aroha, Rangimamao, Bayley, Geoffrey, Brock, Wi te Tau, Trent, Sandra, Tuhourangi, Hariru, Rangianiwaniwa, Samantha, Riria, Malama, Paea te rangi Kia u ki te pai Kia hari koa te ako Next panui, we celebrate students who have made more than one years progress. Wonderful Winners Riria, Paea and Sammie were rewarded at Monday 17th March assembly and acknowledged for the values they have demonstrated at school. They’ve shown respect and empathy to others. They’ve demonstrated honesty in the playground and classroom and pride in their personal grooming and book work. Well done girls. They chose lap top time, a free lunch and an ice block. Yay!! The next draw is at assembly on Friday 21st March when another 3 students will be honoured for presenting the school values of respect, empathy, honesty and pride. Students earn tickets from different staff members and paste these onto a certificate. When all four tickets are collected, the certificates are placed in a special box and three are drawn at assembly. Rewards include: free time on the bmx bikes, free trampoline time; free lap top time; a free lunch; a free ice block and recognition in assembly, in the newsletter and on the website. We have been at school for 8 weeks. She is a semi retired reading recovery teacher who was at Rotokawa school for many years. To our benefit, she now works with our children helping them to speak and enjoy learning. When you come to school you can see her on the verandah in the mornings. Next term, we will find a warm space for her in our new classrooms. Each day we are also fortunate to have Whaea Aneta work with 5 year olds freshly arrived to school. She helps them identify letters, words, colours, shapes… and helps them to speak clearly. Speaking is a first step towards reading and eventually writing. These delightful and precious little 5 year olds have fun when they are learning too. Free BMX bikes. One day at school this term this gentleman arrived with two bmx bikes to give to the school. If you go to Palmers on Sala Street, please say thank you to anyone there for their kind and generous koha to the school. This gentleman said his sons had grown too big for these bikes and he wanted others to be able to ride them. What a generous and considerate person. Gratefully received and now used for rewards. Tuakana Teina Reading We recently tried some relaxed and pleasant Tuakana Teina Reading which was fun and cool. The little ones each had an older student to guide and enjoy books. Thank goodness it was warm and sunny when we did this. Next term, we will find spaces in our new rooms to do this again. The Go Bananaz team Baking at school …talk to us about being honest and respecting things and people. We play fun games and sing songs about Jesus. I like Go Bananaz because at the end we get a prize if we sit up and the spotter sees us. We learn a new verse each week and someone is chosen to say the one from last week. They usually choose a boy and a girl and they also give a prize to the person who remembers the memory verse. Every Thursday, the year 7 and 8s are at Tech at Rotorua Intermediate doing Culinary Arts. That’s a flash name for cooking. Whaea Hariata wanted the yr 5s and 6s to bake as well so on Thursday afternoon, yr 5s and 6s from room 9, were taken to the hall by Whaea Hariata. We carried ingredients and cooking utensils to make cupcakes. We were baking because Brock had had a birthday and then Tuhourangi was having a birthday soon. There are 3 maybe 4 people in the Go Bananaz team. Whaea Peg and Marilyn are regulars. Matua Johno is my favourite because he’s funny and cool. I love the Go Bananaz camp which they run once a year for children 8 years and up from different schools in the Bay of Plenty. It’s fantastic. It’s a good thing to have Go Bananaz at our Kura because they teach us how to be good, kind and considerate. Kyan 10 years old We made enough for the whole school. At first, some of us were not feeling generous and then we talked about sharing and aroha and giving without expecting anything back. Everyone felt more generous. In the end the boys baked first and then the girls. Thank you Whaea Lisa for letting us put our cupcakes in your classroom oven and we are sorry that the oven warmed up the classroom more. When we bake again, Whaea is going to guide some of us on how to behave appropriately in free time. Roimata 10 years old Baking @ school We baked lots of butterfly cupcakes while the seniors went to Tech. We did this because two people in our class had birthdays. Birthdays usually mean you blow out candles on your cake. Whaea Hariata wanted us to do some baking because the seniors bake every Thursday for this term. Thank you parents for giving us ingredients to cook kai. We wanted to show others in the school that it’s good to share, it’s good to be kind, it’s good to be generous. That is good role modelling. Sandra 8 years old. Tech Ed @ RI I a Taite ka haere nga tau 7 me nga tau 8 ki te kura waenganui o Rotorua. Ka haere ma runga i te waka o te kura. Ko Matua Colin te taraiwa. Te Ratakuatawhai 11 years old SPORTS We have strong student interest in three codes: Netball 2 teams at $375 each Hockey 2 teams at $350 each Basketball / Miniball 3 teams at $300 each This is a total of over $2000. Whanau ma, we want all of our students to play their sports and to have uniforms and equipment to represent Whakarewarewa with pride. We will eventually have to charge all players some type of fee and we want to offset costs by fundraising. We also have to get new basketball and hockey uniforms. Please will you support us with fundraising. VARIETY AUCTION – Wed 16 April 4pm All families are asked to donate a prize to the value of $20 to this auction. Items are to be unused or unopened. Sale products from the Warehouse, Bunnings or supermarkets make good prizes. Veges are plentiful at the moment and so home cooking like relishes or preserves are appreciated. Unopened xmas gifts can be brought here. Handmade items are well received. Home baking closer to the day and or smoked tuna will go down well… All prizes will be sorted and organised into ‘lots’. Then we are asking families to please purchase 2 x $5 sheets of coupons. (There are 20 coupons on each sheet.) On the day of the draw, Wednesday 16th April, families can drop their coupons into the draw bins by each lot of prizes. The variety auction happens when a coupon is drawn and the winner collects whichever items are in that ‘lot’. Contact Maude Wano if you have any questions about this auction. Please support this fundraiser because it’s for our children to play their winter sports and get uniforms and equipment.. More fundraising activities to come later. If any parents or whanau are available to help, can you let Pam know with a note through your child. Thanks. Very soon you will receive permission slips for basketball, hockey and or netball. We are still open to parents for coaching and or managing. Thank you. Don’t forget this term: Mini marathon Athletics Spelling Bee Mathletics Oral presentations and the Variety Auction
