Play Leader Role Making our playground a healthy and happy place The - aim of this session is to:Find out what ‘YOU’ think about your playground experience at lunch time. Reintroduce the role of play leaders. Explore the qualities and characteristics that a play leader needs. Find out how to become a play leader. Our playground Think Have you noticed any problems on the playground at lunch time? What activities do we have at the moment on the playground? Is there enough to keep everyone busy? Write On your white board list 2 things you like and 2 things you dislike about the playground. Share some ideas with your class. Why do we need Play Leaders? Can you think of any other reasons? What will play leaders have to do? At Croft, we are developing the existing play leader scheme. We will be providing a play leader workshop. The workshop will train you on how to create games, set them up and how to lead them and encourage others to join in. You will have to commit to the role for a minimum of 2 lunch times every week. We will be recruiting 18 children from years 2, 3 and 4 to start in September. We will train you and help you develop all the skills required for you to be a great play leader. But first, we have to learn more about leadership! Can you name a leader? They can be leaders in politics, sports, education or any other area you can think of. Write On your white board try to list as many leaders as you can. Here are some examples you might recognise: What makes a good leader? Talk With your talk partner discuss what qualities and characteristics make a good leader. Share your ideas with your class and create a class brain shower. Which qualities and characteristics are most important? Are they all important? Think Look at your class brain shower of qualities and characteristics. Are all of these important to all types of leaders? For example, does the prime minister need to have the same qualities as a football manager? Or would Mrs Hutchinson need the same characteristics as the queen? Write On your brain shower tick the qualities that would be most important to a play leader? Now think about yourself Think Which of the qualities and characteristics listed do you have? Do you think you would make a good play leader? Do you think you have what it takes to be a play leader? - If ‘Yes’ you must be prepared to: Give up a minimum of 2 lunch times each week for a whole school term Help younger children in the playground Be responsible for setting up and collecting in play equipment Leading games Help make the playground a safe and happy place Attend a play leader workshop Please complete a play leader application form and return it to your teacher by Friday 8th July If you are successful in gaining a position you will receive a play leader log book to record your duties. At the end of term you will be presented with a play leader award in assembly along with a special surprise reward. There are 3 play leader levels to achieve – Bronze, Silver and Gold – so you can reapply again!
