Gulf of Maine Council’s EcoSystem Indicator Partnership & The Action Plan December 2012 ESIP has released fact sheet associated with 1.1.1 including the eutrophication fact sheet released March 2012. ESIP has released fact sheet associated with 1.3.1 including the climate change fact sheet released February 2011. ESIP delivers Gulfwatch data through the Indicator Reporting Tool which allows comparison with other monitoring programs. ESIP’s work is powered by bringing together over 140 scientists and policy individuals in the seven working subcommittees. ESIP has released fact sheets on aquaculture, aquatic habitats, climate change, and eutrophication. Coastal development, contaminants and fisheries are in development at this time. Continued…… ESIP’s climate change fact sheet (released March 2011) covers portions of this goal. ESIP’s priority indicators include socioeconomic indicators assessing human uses including ocean jobs & population density. Goal 2: Environmental and Human Health ESIP has agreed to adopt the following two activities as they are very pertinent to next steps defined for ESIP 2.0: 2.1.2 Facilitate the compilation, sharing and management applications of data from aquatic monitoring programs in the region. 2.1.3 Foster region-wide communication about existing monitoring activities, perceived gaps, and partnership opportunities. FYI: Additional contractor support requested in recent grant applications. If successful, no new resources needed. Working Group Leads: Kathryn Parlee, Susan R2, Peter Wells In collaboration with Gulfwatch and State of the Gulf. Link to ACZISC , COINAtlantic & NERACOOS through Partnership Portfolio. (1) Survey regional, government, and community groups as part of ESIP 2.0 Data Discovery. (2) Assign grad student or new contractor to compile data and applications, ultimately to augment ESIP Monitoring Map. (3) Leverage Coastal Zone Canada 2014 to validate compilation. (4) Elucidate gaps in data collection through State of Gulf Reporting paper about aquatic monitoring & environmental management, indicators and regional implementation. (5) Solicit ESIP Journal entries about monitoring activities such as sea turtles from organizations external to GOMC. 2.1.3 Foster region-wide communication about existing monitoring activities, perceived gaps and partnership opportunities Working Group Leads: Kathryn Parlee, Susan R2, Peter Wells In collaboration with Gulfwatch & NERACOOS. (1) Submit session to CZC 2014 about existing monitoring activities and perceived needs. Coordinate with NERACOOS and BoFEP to meet Partnership Portfolio goals and objectives. (2) Deploy journalism student (Dalhousie U.) to develop communication materials for Gulf of Maine Times and targeted regional newsletters, especially in Atlantic Canada. (3) Increase regular ESIP submissions to regional publications to environmental managers, community action groups and education organizations. (4) Engage wider pool of participants in ESIP 2.0 committees to build cross-sector indicators and promote need for sustained support for long-term monitoring efforts within and adjacent to the Gulf of Maine.
