The fifth graders enjoyed being part of this process since they won't be attending the new Washington school next school year. By minimizing platforms in the playground design, the vast majority of play features are ground level and entirely accessible by children who may not be able to access the traditional post and platform structure, therefore meeting the current standards for ADA Accessible Design for play equipment. A stair/deck and two climbers were added to make the slide more accessible for younger students. Also, ground level components such as these are fantastic for wheelchair users especially to interact with and develop upper body strength by pulling themselves up, or moving using many of the lower play activities. The structure also includes an accessible transfer station for children with limited mobility to access the platform. A Washington student shares her thoughts about her new school.
