5 May 2017 Dear Parents of Maths Olympiad Round 2 writers Round two of the South African Mathematics Olympiad will take place on Wednesday, 10 May from 14h00 to 16h00 in the Mathematics Department. Students who attained 50% and higher in the first round qualify for the second round. The students have two hours to complete 20 questions with multiple-choice answers and each participant will receive a certificate. The 100 best senior and 100 best junior students in South Africa then qualify for the third round which takes place on Wednesday 27th July, from 09h00 to 13h00 at Bishops. Students who participate in the third round receive a bronze medal and a certificate. The top ten students in round 3 of each category - junior (grades 8 and 9) and senior level (grades 10 to 12) - will receive an award during the prize giving ceremony of the SAMF. From these students, the South African team to the International Mathematics Olympiad (IMO) will be selected to participate in the International Pan African Maths Olympiad. Why should we, as Reddam students, enter and write all the papers? • Mathematics competitions generate a lot of enthusiasm and curiosity for the subject. • Students are exposed to problems that test and improve their thinking skills, and ways to discover and validate problem solving methods. In short, they will become better mathematicians. • The Maths Olympiad is recognised as one of the best vehicles to identify the most talented Maths students in the country. • Participation will put students in a position to reap higher achievement levels at university. • The types of problems are similar to those used by universities as part of their entry level testing (NBTs) and therefore the grade 11 and 12 students, especially, will gain a valuable experience.
