Saint Patrick’s Catholic Church 115 Maple Avenue, Victor NY 14564 Authentic faith, Welcoming and Engaging July 16-17, 2016: Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Why do we exist as a parish? In order to love God with all that we are, to love our neighbor as ourselves, to make more and better disciples, and to learn and teach how to keep Jesus’ commandments. This is Our Mission, based on Matthew 22: 34-40, 28:16-20. We warmly welcome new members to our parish - the Pipers Jason, Stephanie, Samuel & Sadie. Thank you for joining our parish family. Your presence is a blessing to all of us. May we grow together in faith and in love for God and our neighbor. We nourish each other through life in communion. Our Parish Core Values for authentic faith. Our Christian faith, first and foremost, is a gift from God. Precisely from God, faith makes known to us the will of God. Such faith could be challenging at times particularly when it goes against our human instincts and tendencies. It is at these moments when God truly and gently calls us to conversionmaking our hearts to be like that of Jesus. Through authentic faith, God gives us a language with which we can communicate with Him. for welcoming. Jesus’s command, “Love God and neighbor,” calls each Christian disciple to be open and to welcome the Other and others in our lives. It is not enough that we remain strangers to one another. We are more than strangers, we are neighbors to one another. In being welcoming, we acknowledge and reach out to others. for engaging. From stranger to neighbors. From neighbors to brothers and sisters in the one community or family of God. Healthy family dynamics do not simply happen, we make it happen through our commitment to engage and to serve one another. Interestingly, awe is one of the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit. May our sense of awe and the values embodied in it make us always of the presence of God and others in our lives. Grow in the sense of awe in God. It is wisdom! 2016 Vacation Bible School Schedule 9:00-9:10 - Welcome and Opening Prayer 9:10-9:45 - Rotation One 9:45-10:20 - Rotation Two 10:20-10:35 - Snack Time 10:35-11:10 - Rotation Three 11:10-11:45 - Rotation Four 11:45-12:00 - Closing Prayer, Announcements and Dismissal The four stations that the small groups will be rotating are: (i) Bible Stories, (ii) Songs, (iii) Crafts and Games, and (iv) Devotions. Faith Seeking Understanding Question: I am a member of the Parish Visitation Ministry who brings Holy Communion to a Nursing Home residents. A few days ago, a resident joined the usual group during the service. I learned that he is not Catholic. How shall I approach with him the issue of Communion? Answer: Very carefully and tactfully, gently and lovingly! With issues like this, do take the time to speak with the person in private in order to know and understand what his situation is. For our fellow Christians, their reception of sacraments by a Catholic minister is guided by Canon Law 844 § 4, “If the danger of death is present or if, in the judgment of the diocesan bishop or conference of bishops, some other grave necessity urges it, Catholic ministers administer these same sacraments (penance, Eucharist and anointing of the sick) licitly also to other Christians not having full communion with the Catholic Church, who cannot approach a minister of their own community and who seek such on their own accord, provided that they manifest Catholic faith in respect to these sacraments and are properly disposed.” Based on this canon, please find out if there is a serious reason for the person desiring to receive Communion (If you are unsure of the gravity of the situation, please speak with your pastor.), if there had been attempts to approach his minister and what the result is (Once, I myself contacted the person’s minister to let him know about the resident. In doing so, both the minister and resident were appreciative of the help provided in order to connect them.) if the person himself or herself acts voluntarily (It helps when the person is aware of what is going on. There are times when even Catholic residents, suffering from confusion, would spit out a consecrated host. I do not think that they do this with malice. But when incidents like this happen, please know how to properly dispose the sacred species.) if the person, even in his own words, expresses his sharing in the Catholic faith concerning the sacrament (With the Eucharist, our faith in the Real Presence, that Jesus is present Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity in the consecrated host and wine.) If and when the person realizes that he could not receive Holy Communion, do ask him and offer a prayer for him. With this response, I hope that we learn how to navigate between two extremes, that of (i) rigidity or legalism that fails to recognize real life circumstances that make for valid and licit celebration of the sacraments, and (ii) indifferentism that fails to appreciate the sacred value of the sacraments and the necessary disposition in receiving them. For us, Catholics, the reception of the sacraments is not only a right but also a responsibility. Right, because God offers us grace that we need for salvation. Responsibility, because, the act of humility invites us to prepare and ready ourselves whenever we receive the sacraments. Don’t we do the same when we are to meet with a special person? We take a bath, dress nicely, tidy our homes, etc… Should not we ready ourselves for Jesus when we are to encounter him sacramentally? We are here to serve you. To reach us, please call 924-7111. Let there be light… First, Listen to Jesus; then, Serve Him. (Gospel Reading: Luke 10:38-42) Jesus entered a village where a woman whose name was Martha welcomed him. She had a sister named Mary who sat beside the Lord at his feet listening to him speak. Those who regard themselves as friends of Jesus find themselves in his company and welcome such company - in varying degrees. To reflect: Were Jesus to visit my home - would I find myself welcoming him as Martha and/or listening to him speak as Mary? “Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me by myself to do the serving? Tell her to help me.” In Martha welcoming Jesus, she found herself doing so much for Jesus, and she was even overwhelmed by it. While Jesus was in her midst, Martha was more bothered about herself and her task at hand. To reflect: Sundays are the Day of the Lord, our Sabbath of day of rest in God. Do I take the time on Sundays to just be in the company of Jesus? “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and worried about many things. There is need of only one thing. Mary has chosen the better part and it will not be taken from her.” In Mary welcoming Jesus, she found herself spending time with Jesus, precisely just sitting to listen to him speak. Even in this Gospel narrative, while Martha did so much talking, Mary, on the other hand, listening to Jesus, we did not hear her utter even a single word. Mary was content just listening to Jesus. To reflect: Now that the bulletins are distributed after Mass, how do I spend the time before Mass? Do I read the Sunday readings and listen to the Word of God speak to me? Responding to the Call I would like to thank parishioners who open their ears and their hearts to the call for volunteer opportunities. Thank you for being great stewards of your time and talent. (As much as possible, I will try to avoid using the word volunteer because it gives the impression that the good work we must do is apart from who we are as Christian disciples. It is preferable to use the word steward to point us to the reality that everything we have comes generously from God and as good stewards we are willing and generous as well to share them with one another.) Thank you to the chaperones who accompanied our youth in their mission trip to Frenchville, PA; to parents and young adults who will be reading Bible stories to our children as well as coordinating different stations at our summer VBS. Know that much of the work in our parish is done by generous stewards. You enable our parish to accomplish our task, that is, to carry out the mission entrusted to us by Jesus in the Victor-Farmington area. God bless you!
