Smith QC Approved Date 26.8.2013 Page 2 1 Test Your Internet Connection In order to take the Safety English Test (SET), you must first have an active internet connection from each computer you are using. There are several ways to verify you have an active internet connection: Please note: these screenshots relate to Windows 7 OS. On a Windows operating system, look at the notification area of the taskbar and find the network system icon (circled below). Figure 1.1 Click or hover over this icon, If there is an internet connection you will see ‘Internet access’ underneath the name of the network your computer is currently connected to: Figure 1.2 By opening your internet browser (Internet explorer, Safari, Chrome or Firefox and typing in http://www.google.com you can see if you have access to the Google website. If you can access the Google website, please try the SET website by typing in the following address into your browsers address bar: http://www.safetyenglishtest.com/ Figure 2.1 If you can see the screen above then you have a working internet connection and have successfully accessed the SET website. Smith QC Approved Date 26.8.2013 Page 4 3 Can you login to the SET website? The next step is to log on to the portal using the username and password you have been sent. Type in the username and password and press the login button. Figure 3.1 4 Can you run the course? Once you manage to logon to the SET website, check that your computer is correctly set up to run the Safety English Test. You should see the following screen: Figure 4.1 Make sure the computer can run the course, hit the ‘Safety English Test’ button. If the course launches correctly, the below screen will be shown. Smith QC Approved Date 26.8.2013 Page 5 Figure 4.2 If the previous screen (Fig. 4.2) is not shown, or there is a blank screen then the course has not launched correctly. Please follow steps 5, 6 and 7 below to troubleshoot the issue. If the course launches correctly, and the first screen is shown, please continue to steps 8 and 9. Troubleshooting 5 How to check your browser Firstly, establishing the version of the browser the computer is using to access the course may help in assessing why the course may not be launching. Below is the specification of minimum requirements for browser version: Browser Internet Explorer 7.0 + Firefox 4.0 to 8.0 Chrome 14.0 to 27.0 Safari 5.1 to 6.0 Make sure that the version of the browser is one that is compatible and supports the SET course (as listed above). If this is not the case, please follow the steps below to update the browser. 5.1 Check your browser version: Internet Explorer From the help menu tab, select the ‘About Internet Explorer’ to view what version you are using. Smith QC Approved Date 26.8.2013 Page 6 (On Internet explorer 10 and above pressing the alt key will bring up the top menu bar where the help tab can be found.) Figure 5.1.1 This brings up a popup box detailing the version and other information on I.E. Figure 5.1.2 5.2 Check your browser version: Google Chrome In order to determine the current version of Google Chrome installed on the machine, please click the settings button in the upper right corner of the window (circled below) and select “About Google Chrome”. Smith QC Approved Date 26.8.2013 Page 7 Figure 5.2.1 5.3 Check your browser version: Safari In order to determine the version of Safari running on the machine, please click the settings cog in the upper right corner of the browser, then select “About Safari” at the bottom of the drop down menu. Figure 5.3.2 6 How to update your browser For Internet Explorer, please visit the download area of the Microsoft website (http://www.windows.microsoft.com/) in order to update Internet Explorer to the latest version. Smith QC Approved Date 26.8.2013 Page 10 7 How to check & update your flash player The course may not be launching correctly because of the version of flash player installed. For all browsers, the flash player 10 or higher is required to run the course. Check which flash player version you have running, go to http://get2.adobe.com/flashplayer/. Figure 7.1 From the adobe flash website shown in figure 7.1 it is possible to update the version of flash player by clicking on the download now button. Smith QC Approved Date 26.8.2013 Page 11 8 Checking the security settings of flash player In order to allow flash player to capture sound from the microphone for the speaking assessment, you must first make sure that the privacy settings are correctly set up. To access the flash local settings, right click anywhere on the course screen and select “settings”. Make sure “Allow” is selected, and tick the ‘Remember’ box. This will save the settings for the website to always allow www.safetyenglishtest.com to access your microphone. Figure 8.1 This can be verified via accessing the global settings the same way. Click the ‘camera and microphone settings by site’ under the camera and microphone tab. You will see that www.safetyenglishtest.com is now set to always allow access the microphone. Smith QC Approved Date 26.8.2013 Page 12 9 Test the headset is working correctly There is a headset check which will test your microphone is recording sound at the introduction screen of the speaking module. Please click the headset check button as indicated to you in the course. Figure 9.1 Please follow the instructions for the headset check. Once complete, you should be able to hear sound clearly and be sure your microphone is recording correctly. You will then be able to complete the speaking module.
