2017 team captain toolkit - Susan G Komen® Orange County

2017 TEAM CAPTAIN TOOLKIT
26th Annual Susan G. Komen
Orange County Race for the Cure®
komenoc.org/race
Welcome Team Captains
Congratulations on making the commitment to form a team for the 26th annual Komen Orange County Race for
the Cure®. Year after year, Team Captains have proven to be incredible leaders, making the Race more
successful in furthering our mission to end breast cancer. Your hard work and dedication save lives and for
that, we cannot thank you enough.
Race teams help Komen Orange County ignite the inner strength of individual women to take on and overcome
breast cancer. Teams raised $586,000 and team members made up more than 70% of the Race participants.
This Team Captain Toolkit is a resource to help you create and manage a successful team. It will serve as an
excellent tool as you recruit team members and lead them in their fundraising efforts.
Susan G. Komen Orange County Race for the Cure®
This Race is supported by YOU. As a Team Captain, you support Komen’s mission with your talent, time and
resources. The Komen Orange County team works year-round to improve the lives of women and men
facing breast cancer in our community.
The Susan G. Komen Orange County Race for the Cure® joins the Komen Affiliate Network-- thousands of
breast cancer survivors and activists around the globe as part of the world’s largest and most progressive
grassroots network fighting breast cancer. Komen Orange County is a local breast health organization
helping to serve women and save lives. Komen Orange County was founded in 1991 by a group of
individuals committed to the Komen vision of a world without breast cancer. Now in its 26th year, the Affiliate
has raised more than $35 million toward the Komen promise. Seventy-five percent of funds raised are
invested in local breast health needs and services. The remaining 25 percent is dedicated to the Komen
Award and Research Grant Program to fund groundbreaking breast cancer research.
To learn more about the 2017 Komen Orange County grantees, visit our website www.komenoc.org and
under Community Impact click on Grant Programs.
After more than 25 years of serving women and saving lives in Orange County and 35 years as a national
organization, we are reinventing the way we think of breast cancer awareness in the community. We are
BOLD, we are FEARLESS, we are MORE THAN PINK.
What does that mean? It means that while the color pink is pretty, breast cancer is not. We are turning
awareness into action, moving intentions into more impact and challenging our community to ACT, DONATE
and GET INVOLVED. Together, we will pave the path toward our bold goal to reduce the current number of
breast cancer deaths by 50% in the U.S. by 2026.
In our own Orange County community, more than five women are diagnosed with breast cancer each day, and
one will die from the disease. While we have made progress toward personalized treatments and are on the
edge of breakthroughs that will lead us to the cures, our work is clearly not done! This is why we need you!
By starting a team and fundraising, you are…

Team Captain Duties
As the captain of a team, you will be the primary point of contact for your team members. It is your job to create
the team, invite people to join and keep members motivated, inspired and informed of the team’s progress.
You will be responsible for making sure that every team member is registered and ready to help your team
raise funds!
1. First, CREATE your team (you must create/register your team online). Returning team captains must
register a team for the current year. Team names are not guaranteed so the earlier you create the
team, the better your chances are of keeping the same name.
2. Then RECRUIT people to join. Encourage online registration.
3. Remember, set a team FUNDRAISING goal. Team Captains are the number one reason members
fundraise. Communicate Race information to your team – keep everyone motivated!
4. Pick up Team Packets - Each Team Captain is responsible for picking up her/his team’s packets.
Race t-shirt, race bibs, as well as additional materials will be included in each team members’ packet.
Team packets must be picked up by the captain or a team representative. If you made a self-donation
of $26 or more you will receive the 26th Komen Orange County Race for the Cure Commemorative
medal upon pick-up of your Race packet.
LOCATION:
Susan G. Komen Orange County’s NEW Office located at 2817 McGaw Avenue, Irvine, CA
92614. Dates and times will be announced soon.

Race for the Cure. Each year, Honor Roll Members receive special recognition for their dedication and
commitment in the fight against breast cancer by receiving:
• Pink Honor Roll sash
• Invitation to the 2018 Race for the Cure Kickoff party
• Two VIP passes (including breakfast) for the 2018 Race for the Cure day
• Special recognition and invitations to exclusive events throughout the year
The secret to being an Honor Roll Member…FUNDRAISE! Fundraise early and often. Special thanks to our
2016 honorees who will be wearing their superhero sash at this year’s Race. We can guarantee they are
already getting started on their fundraising efforts with even bigger goals in mind!
Individual Fundraising Rewards: Will be announced soon!
Our Fundraising Awards offer participants a fun way to raise $125 or more. There will be a variety of awards
and prizes depending on the amount raised. Start fundraising now! It’s easy. All you have to do is ask. The
earlier you start fundraising the easier it will be for you to reach your goal of $125 or more.
Team members make their fundraising dollars work twice:
Every dollar raised on a team members’ personal page counts toward team totals. That means every dollar
counts towards team awards and their own individual fundraising incentives.

Teams must have 10 or more participants who register under a common team name. Of course, there is
NEVER any maximum team size; plus, there is an award for the largest team.
How should team members register?
Online. It’s easier for you, your team members and us. Online registration also allows each team member to
establish a personalized online fundraising page, set a goal and start fundraising early to help end breast
cancer forever! The best way to register is to go to www.komenoc.org/race. Step-by-step instructions are
included in a link at www.komenoc.org/raceteams.

Anyone who misses the online team registration deadline of September 21, 2017 (Midnight) may register

How can I view my team roster?
When you register your team name on the race website, you will receive an email with a link to your Team
Web Page. Here you can view your team roster, email team members to encourage them to fundraise or
provide last-minute instructions for Race day, etc. If you misplace that link, simply go to
www.komenonc.org/race and enter your login and password and you’ll be directed to your Race HQ.
Can you guarantee my team shirt sizes?
We do our best to order sufficient Race t-shirts in a variety of sizes. We offer small, medium, large, XL and
XXL. Despite our best efforts, sometimes we do run out of certain sizes.
Does it matter who gets which Race bib?
Yes, bibs are pre-assigned with the name of the person that has registered.
Can I have my team packets delivered?
Yes! Qualified teams can have free delivery:
 100+ registered participants, arrangements will be made for delivery the week before the
Race.
Do all team members have to participate in the same event?
No. Regular team members can choose any of the three race start times. If you change your mind and decide
to walk instead of run, or walk 1 mile instead of the 5K, or any other change, it’s not a problem – you do not
need to communicate the change to us. Sleep In for the Cure team members are not required to pick an event
to participate in.
What time should I tell my team to be at Fashion Island?
We recommend that everyone allows an hour to park and get to your designated meeting spot.
