T
he debut of Tecnico to the Super Series schedule will go down in history as a story of firsts.
The first time on this track layout, a first time
winner and the first rain shortened event.
Qualifying picked up exactly where Round 1 left
off with Logan Calvin putting it on pole fresh off of
his Round 1 victory. Behind him, national champion
Aaron Downs would qualify 2nd and Wes Dent took
3rd. Notably, reigning and defending Super Series
champ, Jon Kimbrell had a surprisingly tough qualifying run, putting him outside the top 30.
Into the heat races, Logan Calvin would again
prove that he is out for nothing short of P1 in every race, as he took the win in Heat 1-A ahead of
Taylor Hays and Bill Kreig. Not to be outdone, Wes
Dent would also take a Heat race win in dominating
fashion, leading every lap and taking the victory by
over 2 and a half seconds. Other big stories in the
first Round of heats included an extremely rare stop
and go penalty for Jon Kimbrell, which put a kink in
his hopes at a title defense. However, with 2 drop
rounds per driver, Jon still is the guy to beat. Last
year’s Master’s Runner Up, David Kelmenson also
ran into trouble as contact with a tire barrier while
battling for the lead with only 2 laps to go, caused
the throttle linkage to break. This put David all the
way at the back of the field in his first heat, and all
but assuring this Round will be a drop for him.
The 2nd Round of Heats would shake things up
more than anyone realized at the time; Logan Calvin
would take 2nd in his race behind Scott Kennedy.
This was a strong result for Logan, but weather later
in the day would make that finish mean more than
a normal Heat race. Meanwhile, Wes Dent would

grab his 2nd P1 of the day, making him the only driver to win both
of his races. This would turn out to be a key development.
Before getting to the A Main, the D, C and B Mains would be up
first. The D Main would be a battle between Chris Lorentzen, Kelly
Bastian and Caden Thure. Lorentzen and Bastian would jump out
to an early lead with the two running nose to tail before Lorentzen
began to build a slight gap. After a few laps, Thure would make it
to Bastian and the two began to work together to close the gap to
Lorentzen. Just as they were nearly in position to make it a three way
battle for the win, Bastian would get into the new Tecnico hairpin a
bit too hard and go into the tires. This would be all Lorentzen needed
to ensure himself a victory, despite the efforts of Thure to close the
gap.
The C Main was up next in what turned out to be one of the most
exciting and unique races in Super Series history. Mike Arnold and
Mike Cangelosi put themselves 1st and 2nd in the early laps, gapping themselves a bit from the chasing pack. However, the “Mike
and Mike show” would get caught after the two began to battle,
slowing their laptimes down just enough for the trailing drivers to
close the gap. As the race began to wind down, Peter Liwanag
would jump into the fray and furiously make up spots before setting
his sights on Arnold for the lead. Behind them, David Kelmenson
had driven from deep in the field into the lead group and was laying
down some of the fastest laps in the field. Just as the field came up
the back straightaway with 2 laps to go, the unthinkable happened.
Rain began to come down on the C Main drivers and in the blink
of an eye the track became nearly completely undrivable. Drivers
throughout the field lost all grip and were slipping and sliding off
track, even on the straights. The checkered flag flew, and the race
would be scored based upon the previous clean lap, making Mike
Arnold the winner.
Unfortunately, this would be the end of the racing action for the
day, as the track immediately became too wet to dry before darkness fell.
Since the Heat races had already been run, winners were able to
be crowned in the B and A Mains. Vince Burke grabbed himself a B
Main win based on his heat race performance. The A Main would
go to first time winner Wes Dent based on the fact that he was the
only driver to win both of his Heats. Behind him would be Logan
Calvin and first time Super Series podium finisher, Scott Kennedy.
The finishing order sees Logan Calvin way out front in the points
standings with Adam Nagao a strong 2nd after consecutive 4th
place finishes. Next up, the Super Series will take to the Sportivo
track configuration for Round 3 on March 7.
