Physical Education & Sports Premium PE at Primary School Purpose of study A high-quality physical education curriculum inspires all pupils to succeed and excel in competitive sport and other physicallydemanding activities. It should provide opportunities for pupils to become physically confident in a way which supports their health and fitness. Opportunities to compete in sport and other activities build character and help to embed values such as fairness and respect. Aims The national curriculum for physical education aims to ensure that all pupils: • develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities • are physically active for sustained periods of time • engage in competitive sports and activities • lead healthy, active lives. Sports Premium Funding Purpose The premium must be used to fund additional and sustainable improvements to the provision of PE and sport, for the benefit of primary-aged pupils, in the 2015 to 2016 academic year, to encourage the development of healthy, active lifestyles. The premium for the 2015 to 2016 academic year is paid in two instalments from the Secretary of State to the authority as follows: 2015 to 2016 academic year: September 2015 to March 2016 April to August 2016 Payment date 29 October 2015 £3892 29 April 2016 £9407 £5515 Sports Coach • • • • • High quality curriculum delivery CPD for teachers (Years 1-6, one lesson per week) Breadth of coverage Targeted children – Change 4 Life club Extra-curricular clubs: golf, football, netball, basketball, cricket, skipping, basketball, archery, running (chosen by PE ambassadors after they conducted a survey) • Lead PE ambassadors in running competitions for year groups • Lunch time activities to engage all children Staff & Pupil Voice Pupils • “I’m so, so, so excited about the girls’ football team, training and matches. In PE we played matches with small teams using them” • “I really enjoy leading games and activities at lunchtimes.” (PE Ambassador) Staff • “Having a sports coach enables me to work with small groups of children to accelerate their progress.” • “All the children really enjoy having a sports coach teach them during their PE lessons.” • “Observing Marcus has helped me to understand how to use zoning and the markings to organise resources and the children’” So what? • ‘5-a-day Fitness TV’ is carried out in all classes to improve children’s fitness after teachers commented on lack of fitness • Year 5 swim for one term extra • 68.9% non-swimmers in September 2014, 55.2% non-swimmers in February 2015, 3.4% (1 child) non-swimmers in July 2015 • Entered in to rugby, football, netball, dance, rounders, athletics leagues and competitions • Equipment (curriculum and extra curriculum) • Sports days are inclusive for all children • Health and fitness week (mental health and well being focus) • Children are exposed to a variety of sports and physical activities (fencing, archery, golf, yoga, skipping) • Monitoring of Sports Coach and teachers • Enfield PE team support (Bronze School Games Award, new curriculum updates, competitions, staff meetings, health and safety) • Gymnastics support (staff meetings, team teaching, monitoring, survey ) • Athletics staff meeting (PE consultant – Paula Felgate)
