Worksheets
These are designed to be photocopied for learners’ individual use to assess whether they
have grasped the concepts taught. Many of them refer to specifics on the Resource
Sheets and hence it may be useful to have the Resource Sheets readily available when
the learners are working from the worksheets.
Learners with dyslexia or a visual impairment may require additional assistance
with some exercises. Copying on buff coloured paper can also help.

Identifying the Subject of a Verb
Read the text then highlight the verbs in one colour and the subjects in another.
Before the year 1863, football clubs were popular in England and Wales. Teams found it
difficult to play against each other because they each had their own rules. In 1863 the
Football Association was formed.
The Football Association decided on the rules of football so everyone played the same
ones. Football clubs became very popular. The clubs went all over the country and played
more matches. Usually the clubs travelled by train because the railways covered the
country.

Using Correct Basic Grammar
Some verbs get used over and over again which makes writing very boring.
Read this
Peter said it would be a good idea to take a trip to York. Janet said she had been
there. She said she did not want to go again. Rob said that it was the last place he
wanted to go. He said he had been before. Rob said he wanted to go to the
‘American Adventure’. In the end they all said they would go to York and stop on the
way for lunch.
Decide which of these words could be used so that ‘said’ is only used once.
Make sure the words you choose emphasise the feelings behind the comments.
