The time that employees at EY Switzerland can
spend abroad gathering valuable experience and
broaden their understanding of different cultures.
With our WorkSmart program
we’ve created an environment
that values the whole person,
and provides the right amount
of flexibility so all employees
can spend time on the things
that truly drive them. With flexible working hours,
the technology to work remotely and a holistic
culture, EY people are finding the balance they
need to succeed.
What is EY doing for its communities? The answer
is: more than we can fit in this brochure! Find out
at: www.ey-actandsustain.com. But here is a
very brief overview of our main areas of activity.
Education
EY works closely with schools and universities to
help equip the next generation to take charge of
their own lives. We believe that education is the key
to economic independence and civic awareness.
Examples include our newly founded International
Summer School on Responsible Business or the
annual SIAF Award for outstanding dissertations
addressing the political, economic, social and
cultural interconnections in today’s globalized world.
Entrepreneurship
EY has launched a number of global initiatives
to support entrepreneurship, such as the global
and widely recognized “Entrepreneur Of The
Year” award. In Switzerland we support the
Entrepreneurship Award by the Swiss Venture
Club (SVC) and sponsor the Social Innovation
award of the Social Entrepreneurship
Start-up Awards promoted by the Swiss
Entrepreneurship Foundation (SEF).

We want everyone at EY to say openly what
they think. Mutual appreciation and respect
are the cornerstones of our team culture and
the foundation of our success. Of course, this
is easy to say. But it is also true – as newcomers
to the company will soon discover.

Important pillars
Our strategy for the forthcoming years
rests on three pillars: to continue winning
in the market by empowering innovation,
utilizing effective technologies and delivering exceptional service for our clients.
Our focus here is on SMEs and on our
large corporate clients. In order to achieve
this, we create high-performing teams of
talented, highly motivated people and provide targeted training, coaching and mentoring to help them be at their best. Finally,
we are strengthening our global presence
while empowering local responsibility.
Outstanding talent
EY doesn’t sell products that promise
instant happiness. But seeing their clients’
faces light up is still a reward our teams
can enjoy frequently. That’s because we
are able to make a real difference to a
company’s performance. Working with
EY, you are right where the action is,
working side by side with clients and
supporting them in their success. For
this, you need sound knowledge and
profound market insight, which is why
training and professional development
has such an important role here at EY.
EY is an international organization
without borders. Our corporate culture
is characterized by diversity, mutual
respect and inclusiveness. For this, we
invest in a working environment that
promotes and supports this culture. We
strongly believe that diverse teams are
more successful, and this belief is also
reflected in our leadership teams, which
show a balance of genders, nationalities
and religions. Globally, a quarter of all
new EY partners in 2012 were female.
Strong teams
Our teams all around the globe are
the foundation of our success. Highperforming, diverse, responsive,
innovative, with strong values and an
unwavering commitment to quality –
our teams are our biggest asset and
being part of them is a truly great
experience. Mutual respect and an
inspiring, inclusive environment where
everyone’s input is valued are at the
heart of our team culture. As a result,
our colleagues form strong bonds and
friendships that often last a lifetime.

issues arising in the context of

Transaction Tax team: you will

join a leading media company
where I worked with the CFO on
reorganisation projects during the
financial crisis. After that I was
with a leading strategy consulting
firm for a year. But the EY culture
still attracted and inspired me,
so I finally came back. One of the
main reasons for me to return
is the fact that EY combines a
wealth of expertise from various
service lines under one roof. You
just do not get that in a firm that
only offers strategy consulting.“

Are you always on the
go, Mr. Malkmes?
After completing an interdisciplinary course in American
literature, media studies and international management in the
US and Germany, Johannes Malkmes made up his mind:
“I want to work in a global company with varied tasks, clear career
development options and an international business approach.“
He chose EY. What does the Senior Management Consultant,
specializing in Performance Improvement Customer, say about
the standard preconceptions about his type of job?
Management consultants work 24/7 with no time to relax.
“That’s not true. I normally work eight to ten hours straight, then there’s travelling time on top. The workload very
much depends on the project. I relax by jogging, swimming and traveling - my own private travel of course (laughs).”
Today Hong Kong, tomorrow Rio – consultants have a jetset lifestyle.
“Yes, we do look a bit glamorous, it’s true. But seriously, the only jetset part of this job is the frequent air travel.
Well it is if you’re managing an international customer. This year I have collected a lot of status miles because as an Account Manager
I was working a lot in North America, Asia and Australia. Another time I was assigned to Marseille for four months. Last summer it
all changed completely: From Monday to Thursday I lived in a small village in Baden-Württemberg, looking after one client.
In other words: no jetset lifestyle, but a lot of time for sport and exercise.

Golden fountain pen? Is a standard tool!
“Maybe I should get my pencil gold-plated. That’s one of my standard tools.
Like paper, iPad, iPhone, notebook and - of course - my credit card.”

Young consultants have a burning ambition to be the boss.
“First of all I want to mature personally and gain corresponding professional experience to prepare me for future tasks within EY.
But basically: the longer you work there the more responsibility you can take on in your current position or to the next stage on the
career ladder. And it’s no secret that many people like us can use their time at EY as an excellent
reference, when they apply for a management position somewhere else.”
EY - they just do auditing and tax consulting, don’t they?
“That’s what I thought until I found out more about EY at a recruitment fair. Our organization is very broad-based and offers a lot of
different services. There are career opportunities here not just for science and law graduates but also for people who have studied
natural science, engineering and humanities. Our Advisory Services department is classic management consulting with a great growth
story. In my team in the Performance Improvement department we work on strategic customer models. We advise customers from a
range of sectors such as automotive or pharmaceuticals, for example on multichannel distribution approaches, customer analyses and
sales strategies. Oh yes, before I forget: We’re not on the go, we’re plugged into the mains (laughs).”
