Business HQ - Hawke’s Bay’s newest
business innovation.
Around 100 people now work in the
newly formed Business HQ, Hastings –
a collaborative professional services
site that is home to 11 businesses – all
professional service providers who see
benefit to be gained from interacting,
networking and doing business together.
Each business is independently owned
and operated in purpose-built offices
boasting the best in design, with
technology for today and tomorrow.
Bordering the corner of Hastings
and Queen Streets – providing the
inspirational twist for ‘HQ’ – the site is
a combination of refurbished and newbuild on what was formerly the Bay
Ford Hastings office, showroom and
car yard.
Planned over three stages, the
first started 15 months ago and in
October 2015, the then Code Blue,
now rebranded as Vo2, moved into the
refurbished parts department building,
giving it an altogether new vibe. In
November 2015, they were joined by
Strata Group Consulting Engineers,
who are based in the remodelled

The first of two new-build stages was
completed early this year, with Moore
Stephens Markhams, Moore Stephens
Audit, Jacksons Engineering Advisers,
Logan Stone and its two subtenants,
Goodman Rural and SP Investment Group
Ltd, moving in over the summer months.
The final build stage has just been
completed and saw Createus Group,
Resource Development Consultants Ltd
and Fern Ridge Fresh move in over the
past month or so. Completion of the
53 leased tenants’ carpark, gardens and
communal outdoor recreational areas,
including a secure bicycle park, is also
complete.

wen Rurawhe, CEO of
Moore Stephens Markhams,
a Hawke’s Bay chartered
accountancy and business advisory
firm, was one of the key client
contacts who together with fellow
tenant Russell Nettlingham of Strata
Group Consulting Engineers, put in
many hundreds of hours to ensure
the end result delivered all that the
tenants desired.
“Our firm has been doing a lot of

he design for Business HQ’s
exterior, which fronts 100 metres
of Queen Street East, was the
work of PMA (Paris Magdalinos
Architects).The brief for the site was
to retain the “very structurally sound”
parts and workshop buildings of the
former Bay Ford car dealership, but
for the design to bring them into a
cohesive whole with the new-build.
A variety of building materials
and different textures within those
materials, both natural wood and manmade, ensures the building is anything
but boring. In fact, given the length
of the frontage, the mixture of natural
warm cedar, white, dark grey and
copper, makes it visually interesting.

“We know from various referrer
functions that have been held by
Business HQ tenants, that people are
blown away by the working spaces.
It’s amazing how the site has been
turned from what it was, to how it is
now,” says Gwen Rurawhe of Moore
Stephens Markhams.
Covered yet light-filled walkways make
access to the various businesses’ front
doors, all facing Queen Street East,
direct and convenient from the ample
on-street parking.
PMA also worked with the bulk of
the tenants to fit-out their premises,
while some tenants used their
own designers. All with a view to
having each respective premise
designed for each business’
unique needs, both now and into
the future.
