Westervelts Corners’ News
We are not sure which day in May will be our favourite, dancing with the Aussie X dancers, watching the
Dufflebag Theatre presentation, dressing up like a story book character, or one of the many more
wonderful activities we have planned this month. April was an exciting month with our focus on
Education Week and Earth Day activities. We also collected food for a local food bank, and recognized
our amazing administrative professionals (Mrs. Turner and Mrs. Celenza) for helping our families, staff
and students every day. We organized community service providers to support our families through
dental, vision and hearing screening. We would like to thank you again, for packing litter less lunches this
month, and we encourage our families to promote waste reduction and help to protect our environment
throughout the year.
EQAO begins on Wednesday June 1st - Friday June 3rd. We would appreciate it, if you would
not schedule appointments during this time, and ensure that your children are prepared for the
test, by arriving on time, well rested after eating a healthy breakfast. We thank you for your
support and wish our grade three students the best of luck! We, of course, would like our
students to have the best opportunity to be completely focused for the EQAO assessments.
Sultans of String Performance was wonderful!
Me to We Garage Sale
Mr. Ambury’s class raised over $780 from the proceeds of
the Me to We Garage Sale, for donation to the Free the
Children Organization. Awesome!
Earth Day Clean Up Around Westervelts Corners
Thank you to Ms. Maraj and Mr. Ambury for organizing the Earth Day clean up around
Westervelts. Students from JK to grade 5 participated and cleaned up the school property
and areas around the school. Westervelts students show their pride of their school and
community!
Character Education
In April, Ms. Lookman/ Ms.Amos, Mr. Ambury, and Ms. Maraj’s classes hosted our monthly
assembly and shared with us the importance of Responsibility. We want to thank the students
and teachers for all their hard work in presenting to us this terrific assembly. We look
forward to our next assembly on Cooperation (and Cultural Heritage Day) hosted by Ms.
Steel, Ms.Saleem, Mr. Hancock, Ms. Williams at 2:20 pm on on June 10th.
The Green Cobras were the
House Colour Winners for April !
Our next character focus is on the trait of Cooperation. Definition: Working together with
others for one goal.
You show COOPERATION when you:





Participate with your best effort.
Assume positive intentions in others.
Follow the rules made by the group.
Respect the ideas and feelings of others.
Value the contributions of others.
Kindergarten Registration and Welcome to Kindergarten
On Thursday, May 19, Westervelts Corners will be hosting a
“Welcome to Kindergarten” evening. This evening provides all children who will be starting
Kindergarten in September with a wonderful opportunity to experience a full day kindergarten program.
Families will learn about the importance of play, inquiry, literacy and numeracy as they visit our
kindergarten classes. Teachers will be available to answer questions and share information. Families
will receive a courtesy reminder call this week. We are all very excited to meet our newest
Westervelts friends!
We are still accepting registrations for next year for junior and senior kindergarten. If you have not
yet registered, or have neighbours who have children born in 2011/2012, please encourage them to
contact Westervelts Corners P.S. at 905-459-3456. We will be happy to provide you with a
registration package and let you know more about our Full Day Kindergarten program.
A Special Thank-you!
It was our pleasure to recognize Jennifer Daigle with the
Award of Distinction for the many ways she supports our
school throughout the year!
