1 BACKGROUND/INTRODUCTION:
The institutional Based Rehabilitation Project run by ‘SEED ’ for the welfare of the children of LIFE
PRISONERS, VICTIMS OF SERIOUS CRIMES LIKE MURDER and LEPROSY PATIENTS commenced its
yeomen service activities in January, 1982. This project provides service to an approximate
number of 188 Socially Disabled children of 4 – 20 age group in the target area and runs its
activities in Two villages of Sriperumbudur Taluk (Kancheepuram District) namely
Venkatrangam Pillai Chatiram- (SEED – MAHATMA GANDH PRIMARY SCHOOL ) and
Irungattukottai village( Dr. J.C.KUMARAPPA INDUSTRIAL TRAINING CENTRE ) and in one village
of Poonamallee Taluk at Tiruvallur District namely Utkottai village. ( SEED – MAHATMA GANDHI
HIGH SCHOOL )The project is implemented with the direct support of 25 Professional and 6 non
professional staff members who carry out grass root level, supervisory and managerial jobs. The
project also takes support of the Well wishers, Local Community, Canara Bank, Ramachandra
Medical College & Hospital, Income Tax Employees, Rajasthan Youth Association - Food Bank
( Metro ) , Social Welfare Department, Education Department Tamil Nadu, Directorate of
Employment & Training, Friends for Social Service, Ramakrishna Mission, City welfare
Association, Other NGOs and Government Institutions in the target area. The project has the
Partnership with Canara Bank Centenary Rural Development Trust, Canara Bank, Les Amis De
Soeur Immanuallee, France, Asha St. Lousi U.S. A., Cahrity works Cyprus, Niranjan N Ratnakar
USA,.
II. HIGHLIGHTS FOR THE PERIOD FROM April 2012 TO March 2013
The main activity of SEED is to provide institutional care which will enable the children of Life
Prisoners and Leprosy Patients to free themselves from their existing way of Life and lead a
simple life with dignity.
The children for the academic year 2012-13 belong to various categories as mentioned in the
table below:

III. NEW ADMISSIONS AND DEPARTURES:
During this academic year (April 12 – March 13) 49 children have Left and New admission 54
Children
During this academic year April 12 – March 13) 49children have left. During this academic year
2012-2013 15 children of Life Prisoners, 10 children of Leprosy Patients, 10 children of Single
parent families, 3 children who have lost both the parents and 17 children belong to the
families living Under Poverty Line had been newly admitted in ‘ SEED ’.
IV. HIGHER STUDIES :

K. Pandeeswaran whose father was a Life Prisoner
in Madurai Central Prison and secured 424/500 marks in
School Secondary Leaving Certificate examination
conducted by the Government of Tamil Nadu. He got XIth
admission in renowned School in Pudukottai District.(
Vidhya Vikas Higher Secondary School at Kandharvakottai .
)

S. Dinesh is a single parent child obtained 362/500
marks in School Secondary Leaving Certificate examination
conducted by the Government of Tamil Nadu. He got admission in Automobile Engineering
in well known Polytechnic College in Chennai.
 E. Raja is a single parent child secured 365/500 marks in School Secondary Leaving
Certificate examination conducted by the Government of Tamil Nadu. He got admission in
Automobile Engineering in renowned Polytechnic College in Chennai.
 M. Nanadakumar has successfully completed his 10th standard and secured 389/500
marks in SSLC Examination. Now, he is studying in MMV course in our D. J.C. Kumarapppa
Industrial Training Centre at Irungattukottai.
 D. Vijay is a single parent child obtained 362/500 marks in School Secondary Leaving
Certificate conducted by the Govt. of Tamil Nadu. He got admission in Automobile
Engineering Course in well known Polytechnic College and he is Ramakrishna Mission at
Chennai and we are looking after him for the past one year.
 A. Kalidass whose father was a Life Prisoner in Madurai Central Prison and secured 247/500
marks in School Secondary Leaving Certificate examination conducted by the Government
of Tamil Nadu. He got admission in Automobile
Engineering Course in reputed Polytechnic
College in Chennai.
 A. Mohanraj has successfully completed his 10th
standard and secured 265/500 marks in SSLC
Examination conducted by the Govt. of Tamil
Nadu. Now, he is doing MMV course in our D.
J.C. Kumarapppa Industrial Training Centre at
Irungattukottai.
 P. Dayalan Whose father is a Life Prisoner at
Coimbatore Central Prison, has successfully completed his 10 th standard and secured
323/500 in SSLC Examination . Now he is studying in +1 in his native place
 R.Balagur deserted by father , has successfully completed his 10th standard and secured
293/500 in SSLC Examination. He got admission in Automobile Engineering Course in well
known Polytechnic College in his native place .
 M.Richman Singh whose father was a Life Prisoner at Vellore Central Prison, , has
successfully completed his 10th standard and secured 284/500 in SSLC Examination.
 P. Sambkumar , is a single parent child has successfully completed his 10th standard and
secured 243/500 in SSLC Examination. . Now he is studying in +1 in his native place
 S.Vetrivel whose father is Life Prisoner in Trichy Central Prison, child has successfully
completed his 10th standard and secured 344/500 in SSLC Examination. . Now he is studying
in +1 in his native place
 P.Sivaraj whose father is a Life Prisone in Coimbatore Central Prison, has successfully
completed his 10th standard and secured 222/500 in SSLC Examination. Now he his working
Mechanic shop in his native place.
 S. Sindhiya whose mother is a Life Prisoner in Trichy Prison, her father is expired, has
passed SSLC and now, she is studying her Higher Secondary Course in Govt. Higher
Secondary School in Government Service Home at Chennai.
 D. Divya, is a single parent child has passed SSLC and now, she is studying her Higher
Secondary Course in Govt. Higher Secondary School in Chennai.
 Abirami whose father is a Life Prisoner in Madurai Central Prison, has passed SSLC and
now, she is studying her Higher Secondary course in her native place.
 K.Kaleeswari whose father is a Life Prisoner in Madurai Central Prison, has passed SSLC
and now , she is studying her Higher Secondary course in her native place.
 C.Alsa whose mother was affected by cancer dieses , has passed SSLC and now, she is
studying her Higher Secondary Course in Govt. Higher Secondary School in Government
Service Home at Chennai
 Karpakajyothi single parent child has passed SSLC and now, she is studying her Higher
Secondary course in her native place.
 S.Meena whose father was a Life Prisoner at Madurail Central Prison has passed SSLC and
now, she is studying her Higher Secondary course in her native place.
 P.Yuvashree whose father is a Life Prisoner at Coimbatore Central Prison has passed SSLC
and now, she is settled her life.
The major activities of this ‘ SPECIAL & FREE INDUSTRIAL TRAINING CENTRE is providing job
oriented industrial training in the popular trades, viz., FITTER, ELECTRICIAN, MECHANIC
(MOTOR VEHICLE), ELECTRONICS – MECHANIC and CUTTING & TAILORING for the children
of LIFE PRISONERS, LEPROSY PATIENTS,
VICTIMS OF SERIOUS CRIMES LIKE MURDER AND ALSO FOR THE CHILDREN WHOSE PARENTS
DIED IN ' TSUNAMI '

Apart from the revision Test, conducted for the second year students before their final
examination, monthly tests were also conducted to evaluate the performance of the students
in their education.

 K. Pandeeswaran, 11th Standard, whose father is a life prisoner in Madurai Prison has got
200/200 marks in Zoology subject.
 R.Ananthan Babu, 6th Standard, fatherless child, is showing outstanding performance in all
his examinations. He is getting First Rank in his class.
 R. Pushparaj, 7th Standard, whose father is a Life Prisoner at Central Prison Cuddalore. He is
a good student. He is getting 1st rank in his class.
 S. Elumalai , 9th Standard whose Father died, is a good studious student. He is getting 1 st
rank in his class.
 G.Natesan , 2nd standard, whose father is a Life Prisoner at Coimbatore Central Prison, got
First Rank in his class.
 B. Vijayaprathap , single parent child got First rank in IIIrd standard.
 G. Ayyappan an Orphan child got First rank in his class ( IVth standard)
 S.Ramar , 5th Standard, a motherless child, whose father is a Life Prisoner at Cuddalore
Central Prison, got First Rank in his class. ( Vth standard)
 A.Pandiselvi, a student of 6th Standard, whose father is a Life Prisoner at Madurai Central
Prison, is studying well and she got First Rank in her class.
 P.Alamelu, a student of 7th Standard, whose father is a Life Prisoner at Puzhal Central
Prison, is doing well and she got A1 Grades in
her class.

S.Sasikala , a student of 8th Standard,
whose father is a Life Prisoner at Trichy Central
Prison, is shinning bright in her education and
also in allied activities. She secured A1 Grade
Rank in her class.

V.Muthulakshmi , studying 9th Standard,
whose father was a life Prisoner at Trichy
Central Prison, is a brilliant student both in education and extra-curricular activities. She got
A1 Grade Rank in her class.
 M. Kowsalya , 10th Standard, a fatherless child, whose mother is a Life Prisoner at
Cuddalore Central Prison, got A1 Grade Rank in his class.
 In our Sriperumbudur Mahatma Gandhi Primary School conducted half yearly examination
on 15.12.2013 to 23.12.2013.
 Special coaching classes were conducted for English Grammar & Maths to prepare the X
std. students for their School Final Year Examination. Teachers from the Ganesh Bai Galada
Girls Higher Secondary School, Mint Street, and Chennai, and Volunteers from Anna
University students , The staff from DELPHI TVS and TCS staff came to conduct this
programme.
 S.Elumalai IX std. Father died. He won first prize in computer examination conducted by our
Mahatma Gandhi High School.
 M.Suresh IX std. Father died and mother handicapped. He won the 1 st prize in Library
reading conducted by our Mahatma Gandhi High School.
 M.Pandi , 6th Standard, whose father working as a daily wage labourer , got in First Rank in
his class.
 G.Vignesh 7th standard whose father is a Life Prisoner at Coimbatore Central Prison , got
first rank in his class.
 K.Kannan , 8th Standard whose mother was a Life Prisoner at Vellore Special Prison for
wome and father died , to first rank in his class


 A. Gowsalya 9th standard whose father is a Life Prisoner at Madurai Central Prison, learn

 V.MuthuLakshmi 9th standard whose father was a Life Prisoner at Trichy Centra l prison ,
she learn very well for Power point.
Computer Training is given to all our Primary and High School children with six new
computers which is donated by “DELL” and Professional Computer Instructor through Dell
Youth Connect’s Computer Lab of Hope,
conducted by “HOPE FOUNDATION”
* At Irungattukottai village, 85 Cents of land with
certain infra – structure facilities such as work
sheds were donated by Canara Bank Centenary
Rural Development Trust in the year 1992.
* In this place, ‘ SEED ’ started a Special and Free
Industrial Training Institute in the year 1997
which was recognized both by the State and
Central Governments . This Institute was named
after DR. J.C.Kumarappa , who was close
associate to Gandhiji during freedom struggle and
who was claimed as ‘Father of Rural Industries ’ in
India.
* In this Institute, Industrial Training was imparted
in the following trades:





FITTER - Two years course
ELECTRICIAN – Two years course
MECHANIC ( MOTOR VEHICLE ) Two years course
ELECTRONIC –MECHANIC – Two years Course
CUTTING & TAILORING - Girls only – One year
* In each trade, 20 candidates are admitted as per
the norms, prescribed by National council for
Vocational Trades, Ministry of Labour,
Government of India
* This institute is giving intensive skill training to
the children of LIFE PRISONERS, VICTIMS OF
SERIOUS CRIMES LIKE MURDER , and LEPROSY
PATIENTS and also for the children who have lost
their parents so as to enable them to stand on
their own feet.
* 18% of the students are residing within the campus. They have come from various parts of
the State and also from critical situations. Remaining 82% of the students are coming from
remote villages in this area and also from socially deprived families. After two years full
pledged training in this institute, the trainees are used to get employment in the nearby
industries with decent remuneration.
Institute also helps them to get better
employment through
‘ CAMPUS
INTERVIEW ’. While the children of Life
Prisoners leave the institute with decent
job, the parents ( LIFE PRISONERS ) will also
be released from the prisons after 15 years
imprisonment ( Children joined in SEED at
the age of 6 years ) . The parents ( life
prisoners ) may not be able to find out their
livelihood due to stigma in the society ( society see
them as criminals even after they come from
prisons ) . Their children, who leave our project
with job due to life skill training given in this
institute, will lit the light in the life of their parents.
Ever since its inception, this institute, run by
SEED, have trained 711 candidates out of which
681 candidates working in industries/factories /
companies , 15 Candidates are self employed and
5 Candidates are government employed.
This Special and Free Industrial Training Institute has been financially assisted by CANARA
BANK CENTENARY RURAL DEVELOPMENT TRUST apart from the small contribution made by
the local community.
This institute provides job oriented skill training in the above mentioned trades with the
help of dedicated team of staff members. Activities of this institute are supervised and
inspected by the officials from the Department of Employment & Training, Government of
Tamilnadu and also National Council for Vocational Trades, Ministry of Labour, Government
of India.
It is indeed a matter of great pride that the institute secured 100% result in FITTER trade in
2012and trained candidates from this institute are at HYUNDAI MOTOR INDIA LIMITED as
APPRENTICE which may lead to permanent employment. 148 candidates, who have already
completed their education from this institute and undergone training as APPRENTICE , are,
now, working as TECHNICAL TRAINEES at HYUNDAI MOTOR INDIA LIMITED.
Thus, this institute dedicated itself to
the welfare of the children belong to
Socially, Educationally &
Economically Downtrodden segments
in the Society and made them as good
citizens to face their future with
courage, wisdom and certain skills in
their hand.

 S.Prakash - Ninth Standard , whose guardian is Leprosy, got Third Prize in High Jump
competition conducted by the SIRAGUGAL organization at Chennai.
 M. Suresh, 10TH Standard , whose father died, won 3RD Prize in 1500 M Running Race
competition conducted by SIRAGUGAL.
 S.Elumalai ,Ninth Standard , won Third Prize in Quiz competition conducted by SEVALAYA
TRUST, THIRUNINDRAVUR.

(subject is Importatn of Education) conducted by FASS, Sriperumbudur.
 S.Ramar , 5th Stanard, whose Mother Died, whose father is a Life Prisoner in Cuddalore
Prison, got Third Prize in drawing Competition, conducted by FASS, Sriperumbudur.


VIII. Medical Support provided to children:
 On 30th October 2012, Blood test
camp was conducted by FASS (Friends
Association for Social Service) for all children
and medical advice was given to the
students.
They also conducted Health
Education classes to our children.

Primary Health Centre visited our School .
They took classes on health education to our
children and administered DT Injection to all our children.
 On 11th June 2012 and 19th August 2012, Filarial Blood test camp was conducted by
Primary Health Centre, Sriperumubudur, for all children and medical advice was given to
the students. They also conducted Health Education classes to our children.
 On 14th October, 2012 Saveetha Dental College conducted School Health Programme
and given medical advice about the dental related diseases and important health tips to
the children of our Mahatma Gandhi Residential High School at Utkottai.
 On 05.10.2012, Nemam Primary Health Centre visited our Mahatma Gandhi Residential
High School. They conducted special health check up camp and administered Tetanus
Injection to all our children.

Making available safe and quality food in school .
 On 16.03.2013 Honarable Chief Minister ( Tamil Nadu ) birth day function was celebrated
in our school and participated Minister P. V. Ramana and Poonamalee MLA Sri Manimaran
to distribute food and sweets to our children .
 On 07.12.2012 S.Vasanthakumar Social worker Sriperumbudur Block Development Office
visited our Sriperumbdur Centre verified maintenance of all records and inspected basic
facilities which includes food shelter to our children.

Kanchipuram District,
visited our Mahatma Gandhi Residential Primary School,
Sriperumbudur verified the school’s records like stock register and students attendance
register which includes food shelter to our children. Assistant Educational officer was fully
satisfied with our school.
 On 13.02.2013 our block Resource Centre Officer visited our Mahatma Gandhi Residential
Primary School verified maintenance of School records and appreciated the inherent talents
of our children.
 Standing Committee which consists of State and Central Government representatives
visited our Special and Free Industrial Training Institute on 30th August in connection with
Welding Trade to be started in our Industrial Training Centre.
XI. LIBRARY :
Libraries at Sriperumbudur & Utkottai Centres are
being effectively used by the SEED children.
New books in Literature, Science, Computer Science,
Fiction, Moral stories, General Knowledge, Gandhian
Thoughts have been purchased this year and added
in both the Libraries for the benefit of Students of
both centers. These have augmented the reading
habit and hence the knowledge of the Students.
XII.UNIFORM DISTRIBUTION
2 Sets of New School Uniform were provided by
us to our children at the beginning of the
academic Year ( i.e. ) June 2012. The students
regularly wear the uniform during the school
hours.

with great joy and happiness on 14.11.2012.
 Our Industrial Training Center’s New Building Function was held on 19 th August 2012,

Mahatma Gandhi Residential Primary
School at Sriperumbudur, he appreciated
the facilities provided to the children and
wished them a happy life in SEED. He gave
guidance to our children about the
importance of computer education.
 On 21.04.2013 The Rajasthan Youth
Association of Royapetta celebrated their
27th year anniversary day programme in
our Sriperumbudur Centre. The children had to opportunity to watch a cinema show and to
play with the members of the Association.
 On 16.12.2012 The President, Secretary and Members from Agal Trust, Chennai visited
our SEED Utkottai Mahatma Gandhi High School and distribute Bore Well Motor for
drinking purpose to our children.
 27.04.2012 The Income Tax Department, Nungambakkam, Chennai employees visited our
Sriperumbudur project to conduct Debate Competition and cultural Program for our
children and Income Tax Employees. The Assistant Commissioner from Income Tax
Department also distributed Note books, Pen, Stationary items for the use of the children.
 On 14.04.2012 Farewell day function was conducted in our Mahatma Gandhi High School
for our 10th Students who completed their SSLC examination.
 On 22.04.2012 The Canara Bank Staff and his friends visited our Sriperumbudur Centre to
conduct Various Magic show to entertain our children.
 Preliminary inspection to start Welding unit in our Special and Free Industrial Training
Centre was conducted on 23rd May 2012 , by the Principal, Government Industrial
training Centre, on behalf of the Diretorate of Employment and Training, Government of
Tamilnadu.
 From 19th June to 26th June 2012 , Revision test was conducted for final year students
those who are going to appear for the ‘ ALL INDIA TRADE TEST ’ in July 2012 and the
common question papers were issued by the Regional Director, Department of
Employment and Training , Government of Tamilnadu for the Revision test.
 In the month of June 2012, Application forms were issued for the new admission in our
Special and free Industrial Training Centre for the next academic year which will start in
the month of August 2012
 Revision test was conducted during this quarter for all trades to prepare the students
for ALL INDIA TRADE TEST 2012

 On October 23rd, 2012 Ayudha Pooja and Saraswathi

In the month of December 2012, “ PROVISONAL CERTIFICATES ” for the year 2012, in
original, were received from the Director of Employment & Training, Government of
Tamilnadu and they were issued to the students from the date of receipt which were
more helpful to them to get gainful employment as soon as they complete their
education from our ITC and even before the NATIONAL TRADE CERTIFICATES issued
by the National Council for Vocational Trades, Ministry of Labour, Government of
India.
 TRAINING PROGRAMME :
In the month of March, 2013, our students of Electrician Trade and Mechanic ( Motor
Vehicle ) Trade attended In plant Training in Sanmina ( Multinational Company ) at
Oragadam and obtained knowledge about the latest developments happened in
Science & Technology.
XIV.IMPARTENT VISITOR
Mr. Jean Henin, a sponsor and well wisher for SEED who is supporting the children through
Asmae spent a week (13th August – 19th August 2012) with SEED and in participating in the
activities and celebrations of SEED. He has also expressed his wish to support two children for
higher studies for the current year.

XV HELPING HANDS
This year with the benevolent support of Asmae sponsors we were able to
upgrade the following facilities and equipments for the betterment of our
children.
1. The procurement of equipments for the
science lab for our high school boys.
2. A Honda Generator was purchased and is in use at the
Utkottai centre, it has eased the condition of the residential
dorms as power cuts have become very frequent in Tamil Nadu.
3. One class room was furnished with table and
desks for the usage of the boys to study.
4. A Printer was purchased for the use of printing
for communication purpose.
5. A long pending need of installing an Iron grill gate
for the entrance of the Sriperumbudur Centre
became a reality with the support of Asmae this
year.
6. With the support of a communication consultant
supported by Asmae the following materials were
developed for visibility and fund raising: a. book marks, b. pocket calendar (2014), new
brochure design, A3 size posters for fund raising.


Canara Bank Centenary Rural Development Trust increased this Endowment as Rs
25.00 Lakhs to help us to run our Special & Free Industrial Training Centre.
Sri. Murali and his friends have contributed Rs. 3000/- per month to sponsor the
needy poor students of our Special and Free Industrial Training Center to wards their
maintenance expenses.
