A Beautiful Community of Participation and
Service

I was born and raised in Weber County. When we
traveled as a family to and from Salt Lake City my father always liked
to return home by taking what he called the ‘upper road’. It was, of
course, Mountain Road. I distinctly remember how beautiful the
drive was. That memory is what led us to build our home here.
We have lived in Fruit Heights for nearly 15 years now and
I still consider this a beautiful and scenic place in which to live. My
wife and I love to walk with our dog through the communities around
us.
During the last several years as I have served on the Fruit
Heights City council I have been impressed with the knowledge,
forethought and careful consideration the mayor and members of the
council have given on matters coming before us. I appreciate the
opportunity I have to work with and learn from them as we strive to
serve our city and you, our fellow citizens.
I have to admit that I have been
surprised by the relatively few members of the
community who come to city council meetings
to express their feelings on matters being
considered. Please know that we genuinely
appreciate and encourage your involvement with us in city
government --- a participatory government.
Each spring I relish the challenge of preparing and planting
our vegetable garden. It takes a little bit of effort to get started and
plant the seeds.
Sometimes I get ahead of myself and think about the
wonderful produce that will appear before the end of the growing
season. I forget that between the planting and the harvest I’m going
to have to do a lot of weeding, spraying and watering. What starts
out easy in the cool, spring weather quickly becomes more difficult in
the hot, sunny days of summer.
That’s part of human nature --- we plant a crop in the
morning and hope to harvest it in the afternoon! Our best work
often takes weeks, months or years to be recognized. It’s the same in
a community. It takes repeated effort and the help of many to
develop our city into the place we plan for it to become.
We always need lots of volunteers. We have committees
for Founder’s Day, Parks and Trails, Emergency Preparedness and
more. If you are interested in being a part of any of these activities
please call the city offices and leave your name and phone number.
There is an old saying that “you are richer
if a little child has smiled at you, and a stray dog has
licked your hand, or if you have looked for the best
in others, and have given others the best in you”.
Smile at a child today; pat a friendly dog on the
head; look for a way to help your neighbor.
We appreciate your willingness to give your best back to
the community!
Get ready! Fruit Heights Founder’s Day is coming up. Mark
your calendars for Saturday, August 3rd from 5:30 to 8:30
pm at Nicholls Park. Bring your family and enjoy a great time
together. Save this date and watch for upcoming
information.

FRUIT HEIGHTS MOTHER OF THE YEAR

For Karen, motherhood has been more than just a chance to raise six wonderful children;
it has been her only way through personal tragedy.
When her three sons and three daughters were
between the ages of 3 and 18, Karen’s husband was
hospitalized with breathing problems. Following an openlung biopsy, a pancreatic attack, and 11 days on life support,
he died. Doctors never understood why.
Devastated, Karen’s only desire was to do a good
job of being a mother.
“I knew how important it was and I didn’t want
to fail at it,” she said. All she wanted was “to make sure my
kids stayed united as a family and did what we wanted to
achieve for ourselves. I think that we did that.”
Karen was away from the workforce for 20 years, but returned as a speech
and language pathologist after moving to Utah with her children.
“There’s definite challenges’ being a single mom”, she said, “but I always
have felt we’ve never felt alone, really.”

PLANNING COMMISSION SEAT AVAILABLE!
An “At-large” seat on the Planning Commission is open to the
public. Please complete the application on the city’s website:
www.fruitheightscity.com or come by the city offices at 910 S.
Mountain Rd. to complete and return by Tuesday, June 11th.
The Planning Commission members meet once a month –
normally the 4th Tuesday from approximately 7p – 9p. This is
a great way to be involved and support your community!

WATER RATE INCREASE IN THE
FORECAST
4th of July Festivities!
In November of 2009, a water
base rate schedule was adopted for 2010
through 2015. The next water base
increase is effective July 1st for 2013-14
and will be $29.50 per month, a price
increase of $2.50.
A Public Hearing will be held Tuesday, June 4
at 7P at City Hall to adopt the 2013-14 annual
budget. The Country Road land drain project is

MUNICIPAL NOMINATION CONVENTION
Nomination Convention on Tuesday, August 13, 2013 at 7:00 p.m. at
the Fruit Heights City Office, 910 S. Mountain Rd.
Up for election is position of Mayor and two City Council
Members (all 4-year terms). To be eligible to run for office in Fruit
Heights, you must be a registered voter and reside in the city for a
minimum of one year.
MOSQUITO ABATEMENT DISTRICT WILL
SPRAY….
The Mosquito Abatement District will spray your yard for mosquitoes if you
request this service. This is especially nice prior to an outdoor event or a
specific date. There is no fee for this service. If you have a decorative pond
on your property, register it with the Mosquito Abatement Board and they
will provide you with mosquito eating fish. Please call 801-544-3736 for this
service.
IT’S NOT EASY BEING “GREEN”

Lately there has been a lot of talk about recycling and
what can be done to help protect our environment. About 3
years ago, Fruit Heights City became the 1st City in Davis
County to start recycling green waste and made an important
step toward improving our environment through this recycling
effort. Since that time, several other cities have followed suit
by implementing a green waste recycling program. Much of
the grass, garden waste, tree, and shrub trimmings that are
produced from our yards are now being recycled back into
useful products that are being used in our gardens, flower
beds, and landscaping areas. Wasatch Integrated Waste has
worked hard at providing a quality product that can be sold
back to the customer at a very reasonable rate. If you’re ever
at the landfill, I would encourage you to stop over at the green
waste recycling facility and look at the products that are
available; I think you’ll be amazed.
If you are interested in participating in the green waste
recycling program or want more information regarding the
green waste recycling program, contact Fruit Heights City. The
cost to participate in green waste recycling is $6.00 per month
with weekly collection. During those times of the year when
you aren’t cutting grass, maintaining your garden or trimming
trees and shrubs, the container can be used for regular
household waste at no additional cost. However, if you
choose to return your container at any time, there is now a
$25.00 administration fee, effective August 1, 2013. This
fee applies to those who are opting-out of the recycling
program.
All residents are encouraged to participate in green
waste recycling. By recycling your green waste today, it will
give your yard additional beauty tomorrow and throughout the
year!
