CHOIR AUDITIONS
CLASS DESCRIPTION:
A CAPPELLA (A2): (11-12)
A Cappella choir is a large select mixed choir that performs a variety of musical styles. Students
selected to sing in A Cappella are committed and responsible individuals who are willing to work
and make music in a large group setting. Students are involved in all choral performances and
festivals and should give serious consideration to participating in the Spring music tour.
Students who are selected to participate in A Cappella must commit to the entire school
year in order to maintain the balance of the choir.
Class Limit~ 100 students (55 Women and 45 Men.) However, this number will always
depend on the balance of the ensemble.
MEN’S CHOIR (B7) AND WOMEN’S CHOIR (A4): (10-12)
These choirs specialize in vocal technique and choral literature specific to the male and female
voice. It is especially helpful for the sophomore singer as he/she continues vocal maturation and
those students who may not have any prior singing/choral experience. Students will receive a
foundation for correct vocal technique, basic music theory, and sight-singing. With these skills,
students either learn or reinforce singing in 2-4 part harmony while creating good choral tone.
Students also explore a variety of musical styles and genres, and learn how to work together as an
ensemble. Members participate in all scheduled choral concerts, and at region festival. These cocurricular activities occur outside of regular school hours. This is a year-long class
GRADE/ATTENDANCE REQUIREMENTS AND FINANCIAL OBLIGATIONS
Students should strive to maintain a cumulative 2.5 grade point average and least an 85%
attendance average. There is a class and uniform fee required for the class. There are a number
of extra rehearsals necessary for the first concert. Extra rehearsals could be as few as 3-4 and as
many as 12. The director will determine the number of extra rehearsals based on the theme of the
show. Students will be informed at least two weeks in advance and are expected to make every
effort to be at the extra rehearsals.

Monday Night Concerts and Concert Admission
There are 3 choral department concerts that are scheduled on a Monday night during the
school year: the first themed concert in October, the Christmas concert in December, and
the Final Concert in May. Many choral students are involved in school athletics and
activities whose events and games are scheduled by the Utah High School Activities
Association all evenings of the week, except for Monday night. Scheduling 3 of the 4
Choral Department concerts on a Monday night ensures more Westlake students are able
to participate in both choir and other high-school activities at Westlake.
Concert Admission is charged for the first concert of the year in order to raise funds for
the choral department and as a student fund-raiser. We generally raise $2500-$3000 with
a $5/student and $7/adult ticket prices. These prices are standard throughout the Alpine
School District for their musical productions. Students are able to pre-sell tickets to help
pay for their t-shirt, uniform fees, and tour if they choose to go on tour. It also provides a
budget for the cost of the first concert such as professionally designed concert posters,
special guest performers, and technical needs such as light gels and backdrops.
Remaining funds are saved and used for bigger projects such as buying or replacing
equipment (risers, library shelves, keyboards) as needed.
AUDITION
Students will sign up for an audition time. Current choral students will audition during their
ensemble; Non-current choral students will sign-up for an audition after school. Students who
have not yet participated in the choral department will sing “My Country ‘Tis of Thee.”
All students will have their range heard and do a short rhythm and sight-singing exercise to
determine their musical skill level.
