What is a volunteer …
V aluable is the work you do
O utstanding is how you always come
through.
L oyal, sincere and full of good cheer,
U ntiring in your efforts throughout the year.
N otable are the contributions you make,
T rustworthy in every project you take.
E ager to reach your every goal,
E ffective in the way you fulfill your role.
R eady with a smile like a shining star,
S pecial and wonderful – that is what you
are.
It was amazing to look around the auditorium
on May 25th, and note all those who are
wonderful volunteers. Without them, many
worthwhile projects would never succeed.
And more volunteers could help struggling
organizations and projects to survive in our
community. Even if you do not want to
become a member of an organization, but
have a talent that could benefit them as a
volunteer, you are always welcome. High
school students who need volunteer hours,
young adults, and even seniors, there are
many things you can do to be a volunteer. I
am currently working on a volunteer list –
which will include your interests, your talents,
and expertise. This list will be available for
organizations that may
require special assistance
i.e. someone who enjoys
sewing, carpentry projects,
visiting with shut-ins, etc.
Give me a call at
519-335-3269, or email
feldskovwightman.ca for
more information. I have
worked with many
organizations over the
years, and know how
valuable it is to know of
someone who can help out
with special projects.
Catch the Ace
The Ace is still in hiding, as on May 27th. This
weeks’ winner was Leone Crewson,
who went home with a cheque for $135, which is
20% of the weekly sales. The jackpot
is currently sitting at $3,775.50 plus 30% of ticket
sales in the coming week

Local student wins scholarship
Tabetha Hayden, a former Howick student who is currently finishing her 5th
year at Listowel District Secondary School is a dedicated volunteer, in her
school, and in her community. Besides her school activities, Tabetha also
volunteers at the Listowel Memorial Hospital, and in 2016, was chosen as 1st
runner-up in the Howick Turnberry Ambassador of the Fair competition, as
well as winning the Friendship award. She volunteers in several areas at
the fair. Tabetha will be attending Western University in September, and her
goal is to become a registered nurse and return to the area to continue her
career
Recently Tabetha submitted an essay to the Libro Credit Union about her
community and her volunteerism and was selected to receive a $2.000
scholarship to continue her studies. Congratulations Tabetha. We know you
will succeed with your studies, and will be a very caring and compassionate
nurse!

Fordwich UCW
Members met in the Church basement on May 10th at 7:30 p.m. for their monthly meeting. President Margaret
Roland welcomed all and opened the meeting with a poem about Spring. She then turned the meeting over to
Florence and Connie D’Arcey for worship and program. The theme was Mother’s Day. Florence gave a
reading about Life’s Peculiar Treasures. A mother is a treasure to any child, and a child is a mothers’ treasure.
Honour, love and respect are some of the treasures. Offering was received and dedicated, after which the
hymn “I Love to Hear the Story” was sung. Connie read the scripture from John 2:1 – 12, which was Jesus’
first miracle – changing water into wine. Florence gave a reading, “Managing calamities – a problem well
stated is a problem half solved.” Connie closed with a reading about a Mothers’ Prayer.
The Roll Call, Mothers’ Day thoughts, was answered by 16 members. Plans were discussed for the
strawberry supper in June. Susan Fatt read a thank you letter from the Huron County Museum, for a quilt they
received. Grace was sung and refreshments were served by Carol Purcell and Kis Espensen.
Howick Women’s Institute
The May meeting began with taking pictures of the members of the Howick WI, Reeve Versteeg & Deputy
Reeve Clarkson in front of the Howick Municipal offices displaying the new sign which had been donated by
the Howick WI members. It was made by Harkes Industries of Gorrie.
Reeve Versteeg thanked all the members for their hard work in creating the bows and ribbons for the 160th in
2016 and all volunteer work done by the members.
Darlene Harding introduced the guest speaker Jayne Thompson a Coordinator with the Maitland Valley
Conservation Authority. Jayne talked about the conservation authority and how it was started by the
municipalities in order to manage the devastation caused by heavy flooding, erosion, and water supply
problems that plagued the province. There is a flood watering system 24/7 with 16 water gauging stations to
monitor water levels, water temperatures and water flow.
The conservation encourages the Living snow fence with the planting of coniferous trees. This is one of the
projects that is eligible for funding.
Darlene Harding thanked Jayne for her informative talk and answering questions from the WI members.
A report on both the ACWW Church service and the Painted By Me! Night was given. Both were successful.
A sheet to sign up for helping at the 2017 IPM in the Lifestyles tent was available. Four ladies are needed per
shift to carry out various jobs.
IPM 2017 is encouraging Huron county home owners to create and hang barn quilts as part of the
beautification process.
The Roll Call—what are your plans for Canada’s 150 birthday was answered by: visiting Ottawa, boating on
the Rideau canal, watching fireworks, attending reunions, and coordinating flower beds—red/white.
A donation will be given to the Howick Public school library to help purchase new books.
The June meeting is a Mystery tour organized by Marg Greig.
The Howick Women's Institute members and their
friends started making bows for the Howick160th at
the end of May 2016 and as the orders mounted we
held weekly work-bees at Fordwich Hall. In total we
made over 1000 bows to fill orders from residents,
companies, service groups and for decorating our
community centre for the festivities. The end result
was the entire township proudly decorated in yellow
and green bows!
We are proud of our accomplishment and wanted to
do something for the whole municipality, to thank them
for buying bows and decorating their homes.
Displaying the new municipal logo came to mind and
so we had a logo sign ade by Harkes Industries Inc.,
Gorrie for the front of our municipal office building for everyone to see!

Role of Municipal Government

Municipal governments are democratically elected governments and are considered to be the foundation of a democratic
system. They exist as a means for local residents to identify and address their concerns. Municipal governments are really an
extension of the community and provide a way for the community to govern itself. Their ultimate purpose is to identify and
respond to the needs and wishes of local residents and to provide programs and services accordingly.

Howick Central School
Thank you to everyone who made Howick’s annual Family Fun Night such an enjoyable
evening! Although the rain limited some of the outdoor activities, it definitely did not
affect the fun and fellowship! With the generous donations and support received from
businesses, families and members of our extended Howick community, this year’s event
raised over $11, 800. Howick School Council has passed a motion that dedicates
$11,000 towards rejuvenating the library collection, with the remainder of the funds
raised to be used for technology maintenance.
Special thanks goes to School Council Chair DeAnna Musgrove, for the leadership and
organization she dedicates to FFN each year. We all appreciate her dedication to the
myriad of details that make it possible for our awesome, amazing team of volunteers to
achieve this sort of success. Special mention also needs to go to Marion Feldskov and
the Howick Agricultural Society for running the basket draw at this year’s Family Fun
Night. Again, thanks to everyone who participated in Family Fun Night by donating,
volunteering and attending for making this annual event so successful for our school!
The Howick Bike Rodeo took place Tuesday, May 16 at the Howick Arena. Thank you to
everyone who participated in the Bike Rodeo! Special thanks to Mrs. Kaufman-Binkley
for all of her work behind the scenes organizing the testing and the participation of many
groups! We would also like to thank our volunteers: Kim and Autumn Greer, Pat and George Seibel, Darcey
Garniss, Amanda Stinson, Jen Hutchinson, Sharon Hofman, Kevin Armstrong, Deb Wilson, Susie Nichols, Fern
Wylie, Pastor Mike Hutchinson, Pastor Jeff Hawkins, Constable Stanley, and all the parents and grandparents who
helped bring in the bikes. Sincere thanks also need to go to the Howick Optimists, for making this event possible
and continually supporting our students through this event and many other initiatives! The Optimist Club sponsors
the Bike Rodeo each year to encourage safety and fitness.
