Student Marketer of the Year
Background
New Zealand Post has supported graduates into direct marketing disciplines for a number of years.
Once again, in 2014 the opportunity exists to involve students in a direct marketing award that will
bring recognition and employment opportunities with some of the best in the business – and hopefully
keep students excited about pursuing a career within the marketing industry.
This year we are partnering with the SPCA to develop a campaign to support their ongoing objective
of raising awareness of their Blu Tick programme. Key to the success of this project this is the mutual
understanding that provided it is good enough - the winning work will be taken to market, either in part
or the entire campaign.
The Award – Student Marketer of the Year
Entry is open to any marketing students, either individually or working as teams (maximum 3). A
business brief will be provided, with response submissions required by Friday 24th October.
Judging takes place in November, finalist are chosen and advised, and then an eventual winner
announced in February 2015 at the DM Awards.
Why would students enter?
 Winning this award puts students in front of prospective employers and exposes them as a
potential candidate for employment.
 They will receive acknowledgement in the media.
 They will be hosted at the RSVP and Nexus Awards; showcasing New Zealand’s very best in
response driven marketing initiatives that generate a measureable response, attended by leading
marketers and advertising teams.
 Their work may be run as a live campaign (if successful, the work will become the property of the
business who provided the brief).
 Each winner (or winning team) will also receive a travel voucher to the value of $1,000 to attend an
industry or education related seminar/conference of their choice.
Testimonials from past winners
“Since winning the award I've scored a job as a creative at Ogilvy, along with my creative partner
Adam Barnes. We'd been interns here for 4 months when we won so there's a good chance that
winning the award was what made the difference, we got the job two weeks later.”
- James O’Sullivan (Winner 2009)
After 3 months of interning at Draft FCB, my creative partner and I were offered a 2 month contract as
full-time junior creatives (which has just been extended for another 2 months). It's such a tough
industry to break into, and it definitely helps to have an award such as the Student Marketer of the
Year to set you apart. I very proudly have the award on my CV and hopefully it will be of great help
with any future job opportunities I go for.
- Kimberley Torrie (Winner 2012)
The Judging
The judges will assess each entry on the following weighted criteria: quality of strategy; innovation in
thinking; creativity/design; overall “wow” factor. Judges from within the Marketing/Advertising industry
will be selected and will include judges from New Zealand Post, the client and nominated agencies.
