Communication and Language
• Listening and Attention - children will listen attentively in a whole
range of situations. They will listen to stories whilst accurately
anticipating key events and respond to what they hear with relevant
comments, questions or actions.
• Understanding – Children will follow instructions involving several ideas
or actions. They will be able to answer ‘how’ and ‘why’ questions about
their experiences and in response to stories or events.
• Speaking – Children will be able to express themselves effectively,
showing awareness of the listener’s needs. They will use past, present
and future forms accurately when talking about events that have
happened or are about to happen in the future. They will develop their
own narratives and explanations by connecting ideas or events.
Prime Area
Physical Development
• Moving and Handling - children will develop good control and coordination in large and small movements. They will move confidently
in a range of ways, safely negotiating space. They handle
equipment and tools effectively, including pencils for writing.
• Health and Self-Care – children will develop an understanding of
the importance for good health of physical exercise and a healthy
diet, as well as how to keep healthy and safe. They will develop
independence with their own basic hygiene and personal needs
successfully, including dressing and going to the toilet.
Prime Area
Personal, Social & Emotional
Development
• Self-confidence and awareness - Children will confidently try new
activities and talk about why they like some more than others. Will
become confident to speak in a familiar group, talk about their ideas
and choose resources needed for their chosen activities.
• Managing feelings and behaviour – Children will talk about how they
and others’ show their feelings. They will talk about their own and
others’ behaviour, its consequences and understand that some
behaviour is unacceptable.
• Making relationships – Children play co-operatively, taking turns. They
will take account of one another’s ideas about how to organise their
activity. They will demonstrate sensitivity to others’ needs and
feelings, forming positive relationships with adults and other children.
Specific Areas
Literacy
Reading – Will help children to learn to read individual words and
eventually, simple stories independently.
Phonics - Enables children to begin to hear sounds in words and to link
these sounds to letters.
Writing - Encourages children to develop pencil control and to begin to
make marks on paper.
Specific Areas
Mathematics
• Numbers – Children will learn to recognise, order and count numbers to
20 and beyond. Develop problem solving skills using addition,
subtraction, doubling, halving and sharing.
• Shape, space and measures – children will have opportunities to explore
and use mathematical language to describe 2D and 3D shapes. They will
use everyday language to talk about size, weight, capacity position,
distance, time and money.
Specific Areas
Understanding the World
• People and Communities – children will talk about past and
present events in their own and family members lives.
• The World – children will know about similarities and differences
in relation to places, objects, materials and living things. They will
talk about their own environment as well as making observations
of animals and plants and explain why some things occur and talk
about changes.
• Technology – children will recognise that technology is used in
places such as home and schools. They are encouraged to select
and use technology for particular purposes.
Specific Areas
Expressive arts and design
• Exploring and using media and materials – children will sing songs,
make music and dance and experiment to find ways of changing them.
They will safely use and explore materials, tools and techniques,
experiment with colour, design, texture, form and function.
• Being imaginative – children will use what they have learnt about media
and materials in original ways. They will represent their own ideas,
thoughts and feelings using a range of design and technology, art,
music, dance, role-play and stories.
Child Initiated Learning (CIL)
Fundamental to children’s learning in Reception is learning
through play. All areas of the Early Years Foundation
Stage Curriculum are developed through activities
provided during CIL. These activities encourage the
children to explore and become independent learners.
• Play helps with maths, writing and reading.
• Play aids fine and gross motor skills.
• Play encourages social skills.
