THE SACRED TRIDUUM “…I am the Alpha and the Omega The one who is, and who was, and Who is to come…” Revelation 1:8 In Latin, the word Triduum means “three days.” Coming at the end of Lent, the days of the Sacred Triduum are the most important days in the Church year. These three days commemorate all the central events contained in the Paschal Mystery of our Redemption. The Triduum begins with the Mass of the Lord’s Supper on Holy Thursday. Culminating in Jesus’ Resurrection on Easter, the Sacred Triduum celebrates the new life He gives us through Baptism. Following the ancient tradition, each “day” begins at sundown and ends at sundown the following day. DAY ONE: From the Last Supper to the Sacrifice of Calvary The day begins as Jesus shares the Last Supper with His disciples in the Upper Room. At the Last Supper, the Lord instituted the Holy Eucharist and the Priesthood. He also washed the feet of His disciples. As we join in this celebration and adore our Eucharistic Lord, our hearts are filled with sentiments of commitment, service and love. Day One then moves to Jesus’ arrest in the Garden of Gethsemane, His trial, and His Death on the Cross. On Good Friday, we pray and meditate on the narrative of Jesus’ Passion, we venerate the Cross, and we contemplate the mystery of His Great and Sacrificial Love. DAY TWO: The Silence of the Tomb Day Two of the Sacred Triduum begins when the sun sets on Good Friday. Jesus’ lifeless body is taken down from the Cross, wrapped in linen cloths, and buried in a tomb cut out of rock, provided by Joseph of Arimathea. Holy Saturday is a day to reflect on the hidden mystery of Divine action. United with Jesus in the tomb, the Church is silent at this time, Mass is not celebrated and Holy Communion is not distributed, until the Easter Vigil. DAY THREE: From Death to Life As the sun sets on Holy Saturday, the darkness and death of the tomb is conquered by the bright light and joy of Jesus’ Resurrection. At the Easter Vigil, candles are lit as the powerful story of God’s plan for our salvation is proclaimed in Sacred Scripture. At the Vigil, catechumens commit their lives to Jesus in Baptism, and are strengthened in that commitment by receiving the Sacraments of Confirmation and Holy Eucharist. At all the Masses on Easter, we renew our personal commitment to Jesus by renewing our own Baptismal Promises. Throughout our celebrations, “Alleluias” ring out as we worship and praise the One Who rose from the dead, and Who gives new life to us all. A PRAYER FOR HOLY WEEK Lord, Holy Father, show me what kind of man it is who is hanging for my sake on the Cross, whose suffering causes the rocks themselves to crack and crumble with compassion, whose death brings the dead back to life. Let my heart crack and crumble at the sight of Him. Let my soul break apart with compassion for His suffering. Let it be shattered with grief at my sins for which He dies. And finally let it be softened with devoted love for Him. Amen. —St. Bonaventure Holy Week and Beyond Towards the end of Lent last year, someone asked me, with a measure of annoyance, why we empty the Baptismal and Holy Water Fonts between Holy Thursday night and the Easter Vigil. A wonderful question in light of how important flowing water is in our faith. I told her that we make such uncomfortable changes to remind ourselves, with something more than words, that this is a time to consciously experience our need for God to touch the deserts of our lives—our fears, selfishness, greed and sins. The absence of water fairly shouts our need for the blessings only God can give. At the same time, what I was really thinking about was the days and weeks after Easter when our lives and our Parish will be freshened and sweetened with all kinds of Baptisms and then with First Communions, Weddings and Graduations. The waters will flow lushly and abundantly, sweetening the desserts of Lent and our sufferings with God’s personal nearness. What magnificent days to long for! —Fr. James Krings.
