LANCHESTER SHOW POEM
ORIGINALLY BY GLENDA GRAY
In the foot of the Pennies stand,
Lanchester in the Prince Bishop lands.
Two millennium ago, Longovicium was born
By Dere Street, which many feet have worn.
All Saints stands on the foundation of time
To survey Bek’s college and its land so fine.
On the green maypole dance and carol sing
But no more the stocks and cattle bring.
Hannah no longer brings her fossil prize
But still today her banner flies
Lanchester shows from fifty-two
How the Browney and life has flooded through
Roman, Saxon Plague and all
The village has stood, proud and tall.
