Player Sponsorship Player sponsorship forms an integral part of the ability for the club to provide such fantastic facilities and keep membership as such a low level. It is imperative every player makes the effort to get a player sponsor this season. This will also see you get a discount on your membership! Please see Daniel Barnes for the particular information about player sponsorship. If any past players would like to sponsor a player at the club or form a syndicate, it is a great way to stay involved in the club, please also contact Daniel. Membership Welcome back to another season at the BCC. I am pleased to announced the committee has decided not to change the membership prices for this season however their is a slight change to the cost structure, the table below shows what each member is due to pay. This year we have decided to include a playing shirt in the membership package, we have added $25 for each member to cover the majority of this cost the rest will be paid for by the club. These match shirts are compulsory for all grades to ensure that we give adequate coverage to our major sponsors. We will be wearing the one shirt for all grades and games this season so you will not need to purchase two separate shirts. The majority of the clubs costs come through in the first half of the season so we urge all players to ensure they pay their membership as early as possible, to encourage this we have again included the penalty system at set dates. If you envisage that you will have trouble paying your membership in time please speak to me and we can arrange something. Good luck to everyone this season, let's hope we have an enjoyable year both on and off the field. Darren Senior Payment by 22 Nov 08 $185 Payment by 20 Dec 08 $205 Payment after 20 Dec 08 $235 Play of the Day At Chelsworth Park, a few young kids were playing cricket in the nets, and as often happens, the ball often gets hit onto the ground. After this had happened a few times, someone told Cheesey: “just throw the ball away Cheese.” At this point, he had three options: 1. Throw the ball into the swamp; 2. Throw the ball to the car park side of the ground; 3. Throw the ball back to the kids in the nets. The great man decided on option 4. Throw it onto the other ground where Old Ivanhoe and West Ivanhoe were playing. They threw it back to the kids, who then started getting stuck in the Cheese, saying “ahaha we got our ball back, you suck”. Poor Cheese. Cheesey Gareth Keenan from ‘The Office’ Def East Ivanhoe Saints 252 J Wilson 4/53 P McMurray 3/54 D Barnes 2/60 We were greeted by a magnificent day at Chelsworth Park for our first game on the road. After last weeks disappointing effort, we were looking to turn it around here against a team that we thought we would be fighting for fourth place with throughout the season. We lost the toss and were sent out into the field. Things didn’t look like they were going to go our way early on, when Occa had a catch taken off a no-ball in his first ball, and Rowdy getting the batsmen to play and miss at just about everything. But a few quick wickets to Rowdy had the openers removed and the scores at 2/24. East Ivanhoe then put on a good partnership, before losing wickets steadily to have them 7/146 at the break. All the bowlers had bowled well and we took our chances in the field. Rowdy and Joffa had three each and Daniel had bowled good tight for his one wicket. After tea Dulip put on a good partnership with one of the tailenders, showing that if you have a good batsmen at the other end, all you need to do is stick around. Daniel finally had him caught at long-off by Joffa for 89. Another quick wicket to Joffa saw East Ivanhoe at 9/222 before putting on a valuable 30-run last wicket partnership to be all out for 252 with 10 overs left to play. With 7 over’s successfully completed, we were looking like getting through this dangerous period of play unharmed. The next over Ryan was gone for 0 (off 7 overs), Cheesey was then caught at slip second ball before Sam Norman received a jaffa first ball to be gone for a golden with the scores now 3/10. Rowdy and Doc saw off the remaining overs to have us precariously placed overnight with a big job ahead of us. Rowdy and Doc put on a solid 55-run partnership to start the day before both were removed without the score changing. This saw our two most experienced batsmen at the crease in Joffa and Occa. They put on 29 runs before Joffa was caught for 10. Pierre Woodman then arrived, which prompted Occa to put the foot down. They put on 30-runs (of which Pierre made 1) before he smashed the ball into his pad and was given out LBW of Dulip. Occa and D-lo then put on 56-runs before Occa was out for a well made 88. When Gazza was runout with the scores on 184, the game looked like it was going to go the wrong way for the good guys. With Daniel hitting the ball over the field with great results, all Pidge had to do was survive. This was the basic plan. If the ball was up, D-lo was going after it, and Pidge was just trying not to go out. Gradually, we worked closer and closer to an unlikely victory. East Ivanhoe’s bowlers started to tire, and the Banyule boys started to lift. Dulip came back into the attack, and bowled a good tight line to both batsmen. For some reason, D-lo decided on a few occasions to take a single off the first ball and leave the other 5 for Pidge to survive. As the runs continued to tick over, the required run rate was dropping, and soon it was less than 2 runs an over. With victory almost insight, and only 15 or so runs required, Dulip had Pidge caught at gully. Or so we thought. In the end, a simple catch to Noonan at gully was put down (much to Dulip’s displeasure – ie, he looked like he was going to strangle Noon’s) and we were still in it. Eventually, we got over the line as Daniel timed a beautiful straight drive down the ground for 4 to secure a famous victory. The win was made up of several good partnerships, a great captains knock from Occa, and a tailender sticking around with a guy who was seeing the ball well. This is the kind of win that can set up our season, and hopefully we can take this confidence through the rest of the season. Moshie joined PD at the crease, PD was intent on lifting the scoring rate by peppering the boundary from backward point through to cover, the next wicket came when the score was on 93. After losing Marty (10) quickly, it was up to Banga and PD to consolidate again to ensure we weren’t losing regular wickets. When Banga was dismissed for 32, which consisted of 8 scoring shots (hopefully everyone can do their 4 times tables) the score was on 184 and PD was rapidly closing in on his maiden century. In Arjun Arora’s first senior game, he was their at the crease when PD gleefully raised his bat with a four over gully, which will hopefully inspire him to one day making his own for the mighty Bears and plenty to follow. When PD was finally dismissed for a brilliant 148, consistent partnerships and individual scores continued with 19 to Arjun, 45 to Johno, a personal highest score to Mick Delaney (48) and 11 not out to Joey Serafin, a declaration at 8/370 was made allowing 8 over’s at an opposition who was extremely tired. With PD puffing more than a steam train the new ball was thrown to Hodgey after a great display in the previous game and Johno. Unfortunately we let a catch slip through and another confident appeal for a caught behind turned down, but kept the batters honest as they were 0/17 at the end of play. Entering the second day full of confidence, the theme for the day was not what was done 7-days ago, but what had to be done on this day which was to take 10 wickets. Unfortunately the skipper dropped an easy catch at mid off (Hodgey’s bowling) early, but both openers were removed rather cheaply with the score at 2/32. Unfortunately the next pair put on 90 in the next 14 over’s, but to the bowlers credit the last 4 over’s leading into the first drinks break, the runs were dried up which resulted in creating pressure. Upon the resumption, 4 quick wickets were taken which gave the ‘Good Guys’ the upper hand which was never let go, with East Ivanhoe being bowled out at around 5:00 for decent score of 250. Even though we were kept out there for most of the day, it will hold us in good stead for the games coming up for getting over’s in the field and work into the bowlers, getting ready for the harder games coming up. Special mentions to Hodgey (1/34) who battled into a strong wind on the second day, Mick Delaney (2/19) who bowled 7 tight over’s which produced results and Luke Delaney who showed further improvement behind the stumps. Mumbles, hulking in his water boy duties for the day! Bring on Edinburgh this week. With Sam Place not available after a great effort in the first game, Spudda and PD went out and put on a solid opening stand of 31 before Spudda was caught hooking for 19. When M Price 49 W Kazi 45 D Veal 44 M O’Ryan 39 Def Heidelberg West 9/255 A Mulholland 2/39 M Asbury 2/39 On a warm Spring day, we ventured to West. Questions were already being about the resilience of the Dream team. Billy - Gawn for the year Tennis Achilles TV - Gawn for two weeks. Bicep ping whilst batting Fez - Gawn fishing/working? Another question was to be raised? How many would West have? Would Sir Padfull play? The answer was 11 and no (he new Philo was playing). After winning the toss and bowling. Refer Day Two the the answer to this interesting decision by the Captain. The Bears opened with a familiar attack. Barnes from one end, Veal from the other. Any resemblance to the demon attach of the 90's was quickly erodes when after the 1st over, the Veal came of 3 steps and bowled most balls on the offside. After a quick start by West, Leader got a faint edge which was brilliantly accepted by Pricey going down to his left. One of the best seen for the Bears. (No $5 for Leader). Philo in his 8th had a sharp catch taken by Mike Asbury (No $5 for Philo) West continued to bat positively, but also lost wickets steadily. At Tea West were 6 for 116. The Bear were ready to clean up the tail and have a bat. Alas, West did not read out script book. Some lusty hitting tempered by some good outfield catching saw West amass a respectful 9 for 255. The best of the bowling was Alex with 2 fa and Price took to excellent catches. Unfortunately, Scoobee went for 12 in one over ($5 bucks). Day 2. West turned out with 10, and had two subs already on the field. The skippers premonition was correct. West like to play cricket for one day a fortnight. Worse was to come for West when their opening bowler left after 90 minutes. A solid start saw both batsmen keep their $5. We lost the skipper for 17, with the score at 36. Smithy jointed Pricey. Both looked a tad rusty, but still had enough form to put away the loose ones. On 49 Pricey played one on. 2 fa 99. Scobbee entered the field and after a couple of overs his foot work was starting to tick over. At Tea we were 2 fa 116. After Tea, Smith looking a little tired spooned a catch to square leg. Out for a well made 45. Leader joined Scoobbee. Both looked comfortable, but spent most of the first 10 overs pointing out each others batting deficiencies. With the ground reasonable quick and some lust lofting, the score moved to 178, when a rookie umpire fire fired out Scoobbee. The ball pitched outside leg. The Keeper was two feet down leg and the fact that the ball hit the bat first still did not convince the umpire. Gone for 39 and 4 fa 178. Enter Swanny. The two batsmen decided that quick running between wickets was the way to beat a tiring attack. Swanny looked to the sky and was on his way for a quick fire 19. 5 fa 217. Michael Asbury came and went, but he contributed 10 and a partnership of 15 in a short time. Philo came, again, only for a short time but another partnership of 21. Philo made 9 (does that incur a $5 fine?) Renna and Leader finished of the win with two overs to go. Leader losing his wicket after hitting the winning run. Some indecision regarding the scorebook saw Alex having to face two ball for no runs. The moral of the story. This year Bellfield numbers were up from 2 to 8 for the beginning of the match. With Graham resuming the captaincy so to did our leadership group!! Winning the toss Bellfield were asked to bat. Beasty and Graham opened up both bowling well, but without luck. Pick of the bowlers was James Fraser 2/3 from 5 and Brian Wallwork 3/6 from 2.3 overs, Gordo and Jedda chipped in for one each with Bellfield all out for 96 in 33.3 overs. Much to the amusement of his team mates, Jedda’s one arm ball missed the pitch by about 6 feet!!!! While Beasty was umpiring he enquired as to how many balls were remaining in the over. Gordo let him know with “Three left NumNuts” With plenty of overs to bat Graham made it clear that everyone would be getting a bat with as much time as required. Ian Cugley put his hand up to open with Brian Wallwork and they powered to 118 for the 1st wicket. Ian started off a little nervous but once he settled in was never troubled for a very well made 62. Brian hit the ball hard to all points of the ground for 74. The Puppeteer hit a quick 30 but it was young Steve Tindale who made a memorable senior debut of 79. This included some big hitting much to the delight of his teammates. Big Steve Stancombe did some big hitting of his own, with an entertaining 34. Gordo continued his run of not out’s….0* Asked to bowl the remaining 37 overs an enthusiastic 4th grade dragged there weary bodies back into the middle. Graham gave everybody apart from The Puppeteer and Funky a bowl with 7 individual bowlers picking up a wicket each. Going for out rights is a difficult task so we set about to have some fun. The one arm ball was bowled again and this time it only missed the pitch by 2 feet!!! Beasty gave us some entertainment by naming who he wanted to field balls hit near him. However it was Jedda who indirectly provided us with the highlight of the day. Fielding in gully, midway through an over, Jedda was joined by Fergus!!! Before he could take position Fergus was sent off by a bemused Jedda. Not to be outdone and clearly wanting to be a part of the action, Fergus got as far as the Square Leg umpire and sat himself down. By now the whole team was watching so Jedda let Fergus know he could still see him. On this cue Fergus picked himself up and strolled off the ground!!!
