HEALTH AND WELLBEING STRATEGY FOR WAKEFIELD
This is an easy read summary of the Wakefield Health
and Wellbeing Strategy
The Health and Wellbeing Board
A group of different organisations in Wakefield District
have got together to make sure that everyone gets equal
treatment and services and have better health. The group
is called the Wakefield Health and Well-Being Board.
The Health and Wellbeing Strategy
The Board have written an important plan for the people
of Wakefield District called the Health and Well Being
Strategy. The plan explains the areas of work that the
Board will focus on. This is the easy read version of the
plan.
Priorities
1 -----2 -----3 -----4 -----5 -----6 ------
The Board have chosen 6 priorities to put in the plan. The
6 priorities are the areas of work that the Board think are
the most important to work on over the next three years.
Priority 1: Inequalities
If some people get poorer care and services than other
people, we say they face ‘inequalities’. This can mean
people have less good health and wellbeing. Inequalities
can be caused by living in poorer areas, not having a job
or your own home or having a disability.
The Board want to make sure that everyone gets good
jobs, housing, health and social care.
Priority 2: Healthy living and quality of life
Some people have better health than others because of
what they do to keep active and have healthy thoughts
and emotions.
The Board want to help people to keep healthy by doing
things such as eating the right food and taking more
exercise and live. The Board also wants people to enjoy
where they live and work.
Priority 3: Early years
Making sure that all babies and children have a healthy
start is important for the whole of their lives. In Wakefield
some families have many different problems due to lack
of money and poor health.
The Board want organisations to work together to help
parents and children get the support and services they
need.
Priority 4: Mental health
Someone who has good mental health is happy with
themselves and their life. In Wakefield, more people are
saying that they have mental health problems. These can
have a bad effect on what they say and do and how they get
on with other people and their family. These problems can
sometimes stay with the young people as they grow up into
adults.
The Board want to help people of all ages learn how to
get through everyday life.
The Board also want to help people with mental health
problems get the support they need.
Priority 5: Long term conditions
In Wakefield there are many people of all ages who have
illnesses and diseases that cannot be cured such as
epilepsy and asthma. These are called long term
conditions. These conditions can make people very ill and
some may need to go into hospital.
The Board want to prevent people getting long term
conditions and help those living with it to be as healthy as
possible.
Priority 6: Older people
In Wakefield more people are living longer. While this is
good, some people who are old already have poor health.
Some young people will also have health problems as
they get old.
The Board want to help older people keep healthy and
work with others to make services better.
