Listening to directions at Santa’s Shop! 1D Newsletter December 10, 2015 Dear 1D Families, This week, we enjoyed learning more about Lily W. as our star of the week! We have continued our theme of Christmas Around the World this week with Germany! We listened to The Cobweb Christmas, which tells about the custom of decorating Christmas trees, and we made a paper gingerbread person for our suitcase. In Journeys this week, we read How Leopard Got His Spots by Gerald McDermott. Our essential question for this text was “How are jungle animals different from farm animals?” In this folktale, we learned that it is best to treat your friends how you want to be treated. We also discussed sequence of events, and worked to order events in the story by first, next, and last. This week's words to know were brown, own, very, off, never, know, out, and been. Our spelling focus was /ch/, and in grammar we learned that a command is a sentence that tells someone to do something. Next week, we will not have a story of the week or spelling words. We will be reading and comparing different versions of the gingerbread story, working on Christmas writing, and finishing our Christmas Around the World unit. In Math, we learned that = means “the same as,” and we practiced determining if number sentences were equal. For example, does 3+6= 4+5? To figure this out, we solved both problems on each side of the = side to see if they shared the same sum. We also discussed how knowing our addition and subtraction facts can help us solve problems because we can use related facts. Today, we had our Chapter 5 test in Math on Addition and Subtraction relationships. We are in our second week of Advent, and we put our second candle on the wreath this week. On Tuesday, we attended mass for the Holy day of the Immaculate Conception, and in class we discussed how Mary was very special because she was born without original sin. We finished our chapter on Advent, and next week, we will begin discussing Christmas. The students have been working hard to prepare for the Nativity Play next Thursday! The children had a great time visiting Santa’s North Pole Shop on Wednesday! I was very impressed with the thoughtfulness and care that the children exhibited in selecting a gift that was just right for someone on their list. I know that they are eager to share them with you on Christmas! Next Friday, is our Grand Guest Day. We are asking all children to bring in a Christmas book that they can read with their grand guest. Please have your child bring this in next Friday, December 18th. I hope that you have a nice Advent weekend! Peacefully, Miss DeLaney Ask your child about our learning...
