BLUE COAT PACKETSHAPER ADMINISTRATOR (BCPSA) V5.0.1

Module Summaries (April 2016)
This document gives brief summaries of the modules in the Blue Coat Certified PacketShaper Administrator (BCPSA) course.
Module 1: Blue Coat PacketShaper
Module 5: Understanding Applications on the Network
This module provides an introduction to PacketShaper, and also serves
as an outline for the features and functions described later in this
course. Concepts such as the web as the platform and typical networkrelated business challenges are used to illustrate why application
monitoring and performance improvement – through bandwidth usage
reporting, control, and compression – are critical in maintaining Quality
of Service (QoS). PacketShaper’s operational capabilities, features and
traffic management solutions are explained from a ‘big picture’ point
of view.
This module deals primarily with introducing the concepts of inside/
outside host, inbound/outbound traffic, and the classification of traffic.
This chapter also introduces the traffic tree, the main feature for traffic
management in PacketShaper.
Module 2: PacketShaper Licensing
This module discusses the types of licensing for PacketShaper modules.
Each module is licensed for use, so customers purchase only the
features they need or want to use. Sample license keys are described
so students can see what they look like and how they are installed.
Also described are several commands that will show which licenses are
currently active on a PacketShaper.
Module 3: Packetshaper Initial Configuration
This module walks you through the basic setup of a new PacketShaper
appliance. Some concepts of the initial configuration also apply to
reconfiguring an existing PacketShaper that has been restored to factory
default settings.
Module 4: PacketShaper GUI and CLI
MODULE SUMMARIES:
BCPSA
This module provides an overview of PacketShaper’s web UI and CLI
access points. It focuses on the main features of each part of the UI and
the different levels of access a user can have. This includes an overview
of the Sky UI, the Advanced UI and the CLI interfaces.
Module 6: Analyzing Network Applications
This module expands on the previous one, and describes methods for
analyzing the applications and classes flowing through your network.
The different methods PacketShaper uses to analyze traffic and collect
its data are described, including class hits, bandwidth utilization, and
link utilization.
Module 7: Controlling Applications on the Network
This module provides an introduction to the methods for controlling
traffic using PacketShaper. Focus here is on the concepts behind TCP
and UDP rate control, and how PacketShaper maintains quality of
service for users by controlling minimum and maximum bandwidth rates,
allocating traffic by priorities, and targeting traffic with policies to keep
them from monopolizing the link.
Module 8: Partitions
This module takes an in-depth look at using partitions to manage
bandwidth. It describes the types of partitions that can be deployed,
and how they can be used to protect critical traffic, limit non-critical
traffic, and subdivide any traffic so no one person can monopolize the
link for that class or application.

Module 9: Policies
Security
Empowers
Business
This module takes an in-depth look at using policies to manage traffic.
Policies can protect application performance by placing importance on
specific flows, or removing it from consideration altogether.
Module 10: Maintaining PacketShaper
This module provides an overview of the features and tools available for
maintaining PacketShaper performance. In particular, you can back up
and restore appliance configurations, upgrade or revert the PacketWise
software image, or reset various parts of the appliance’s configuration
as needed.
