May - Italian Heritage Lodge

MAY 2011
PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
I begin this letter with sad news. We lost one of our beloved lodge brothers, Earl Tuggle Jones, Jr., whom we
will miss greatly. Linda, we share your sorrow at your great loss. You remain in our thoughts and prayers.
I continue with an ever constant watch of the weather. May God have mercy on those who lost their lives,
possessions, and loved ones. Without entering into the debate on climate warming, it is obvious that our
planet is undergoing significant climate change. Whether this is a long term cyclical change or human induced
activity, nobody really knows. Added to the weather changes, we see the frequent disruptions to the earth’s
crust as volcanic eruptions and earthquakes continue in the so called “ring of fire” throughout the western
Pacific from Indonesia to Alaska.
Turning from those things that we can not control to those that we can, this month’s lodge meeting will take
place at St Mary’s K of C hall MAY 21ST, repeat MAY 21st at 7PM. We were not able to arrange our usual 2nd
Saturday of the month due to pre-booking by a St. Mary’s church group that had priority over us. I realize that
this is a less than desired date for the meeting due to college graduations and other planned activities by some
of our members, but it was this day or no day in May. Dolores and I are trying to cope with a graduation party
for 2 of our grandchildren as well as a planned trip by Dolores and 2 of our members to Williamsburg on the
same date as our lodge meeting. We will just have to make the best of it. We will have a pot-luck dinner with
one major change: the ladies are requested to stay out of it! We celebrate Mother’s Day this month, and the
least we can do is spare the ladies the drudgery of preparing one meal. The men are asked to bring a main
dish or a side dish or a dessert for 6-8 people. You can cook it or purchase it from Costco, Wegman’s,
Kentucky Fried Chicken or wherever.
Provided that we survive the meal in healthy fashion, we will have guest speakers who will address “Obici” and
his connection to Planters Peanuts. I believe that they are coming down from New Jersey so let’s have a good
turnout.
I would like to take this opportunity to express my sincere thanks to the following lodge members who have
volunteered to be lodge delegates to the convention: John Asiello, Laura Asiello, Lucio D’Andrea , Tony
Finocchiaro, Gene La Colla, Jo Lowe, Dolores Marcinkowski, Yolanda Pelosi and Dot Saia. The success of our
lodge depends on volunteer participation such as this.
Joe La Marca has recommended that people should be reminded that “Il Giornale” will no longer be mailed to
their homes; however, it is available at www.osiava.org. Note the two articles in the current issue to include an
excellent piece by our own Dennis Lillo. If you have an interesting account dealing with Italian heritage, culture,
or family history, please contact me.
The lunch bunch will convene May 12. See Dennis Lillo’s directions in this newsletter. Our council meeting will
be held this month. I will provide the agenda and further details by separate e-mail.
Enjoy the spring flowers and I hope to see you at the lodge meeting.
Ciao, Frank

MAY LODGE MEETING WILL BE ON THE 21st
The May lodge meeting this month will be on the third Saturday of May, not the usual second Saturday.
See Frank’s letter on Page 1 for the details. The important point to remember is that the men will be
providing the meal in honor of Mother’s Day so the ladies get a break from doing the cooking. There
will be guest speakers coming all the way from New Jersey so let’s have a good turnout.

WITH DEEPEST SYMPATHY
We note with great sorrow the passing April 10 of our webmaster and
photographer of many years, dedicated lodge and council member, Earl
Tuggle Jones, Jr.
Earl provided great innovation in designing and maintaining our web site,
even keeping it up to date remotely, when he was often out of the country. Our
heart goes out to Earl's wonderful wife, Linda. We all will miss Earl very, very
much.
A memorial service was held Saturday, April 16th, at St. Mary of Sorrows
Historical Church, located at 1112 Fairfax Station Road, Fairfax Station,
Virginia 22039. After internment in the church cemetery, family and
friends gathered for a celebration of Earl's life.

TERREMOTO E TSUNAMI LA TESTIMONIANZA
Massimo, napoletano a Tokyo:
«Volevo urlare ma vedevo tutti composti»
Fa il consulente: «Avevo solo l'esperienza delle
scosse dell'80. Qui è stato peggio ma zero
panico, dopo un po' tutti di nuovo in ufficio. Le
radiazioni? Non ho paura»
«Credevo fosse la solita scossetta». Invece a Tokyo
la faglia tremolante stavolta ha fatto dannatamente
sul serio. Massimo De Matteo, napoletano
«Nessuno urlava, nessuno correva, grande popolo
venti, chi sessanta piani a piedi).
scrivania. Per un po' ci siamo dimenticati del
terremoto e siamo tornati, da bravi nipponici
(ormai sono influenzato) al lavoro».

Siete tornati a lavorare? Incredibile.

Firenze, Torino, Milano, Vicenza e Pordenone».
Cosa facevi prima a Napoli e perché hai deciso di
trasferirti?
«Quando mi sono laureato all'Orientale di Napoli
in Giapponese e inglese, nell’aprile del 2004, ho
cominciato un part time come cameriere per
mettere da parte i soldi e andarmene all'estero.

pericolo costante. Male che vada parto per Napoli,
non torno a casa da due anni».

ITALIAN CULTURAL SOCIETY MOVIE
The Italian Cultural Society is showing another in its series of Italian films on Sunday, May 15, at its
general meeting at 1:00 PM. The Society meets at the Friendship Heights Community Center, 4433
South Park Ave., Chevy Chase, Md. The movie is free and there is free parking. The following item
from IHL member Joe Onofrietti REVIEWS THE MOVIE.
END OF AN ERA
This season we are proud to have brought classic Italian Neorealism films like Open City, The Bicycle
Thief and Ossessione. It is only fitting to end the season with Umberto D, the last Italian Neorealism
film made. Vittorio De Sica watched his father, Umberto De Sica, work 30 years for the Italian Ministry
of Public Works only to be left a meager pension which didn’t match inflation. This was the inspiration
for his central character, Umberto Domenico Ferrrari (Carlo Battisti). Maria Pia Casilio makes her film
debut as a teenage maid facing eviction by her landlady, Olga, (Lina Gennari) and pregnant by an
Italian soldier who wants nothing to do with her. Too proud to beg and too dumb to steal, Umberto is
left to wander the streets of Rome alone with his faithful dog, Flike.
Maria Pia Casilio said in a 2003 interview, “The story of Umberto D is still true in Italy today.” Umberto
D was nominated for best screenplay at the 1952 Academy Awards and won the New York Film Critics
Circle Award for Best Foreign Film of the Year. Italian with English subtitles.
