October 2015 This event is for Active Schools only. Dear Y4/5 Teacher, It is with great pleasure that I invite your school to the Leeds North West Y4/5 Basketball Festival. This is a fun festival to provide an opportunity for your pupils to showcase basketball skills learnt in lessons. A choice of four central venues has been provided, please just select one venue you wish to compete at. The winning teams from each heat will proceed to the SSP Y4/5 Basketball: Friday 26th February 2015 at Leeds Becketts University. 4.00-5.30pm. After the final players, teachers & parents have been invited to stay to watch the Leeds Force BBL game v Manchester Giants at 7.30pm. All matches during the festival will be 5-a-side; however, you may bring squads of up to 10 players (at least 2 of whom being girls). You can enter up to 2 teams if you wish (numbers permitting). Please aim to bring at least one pupil that is new to inter school competition. Please state on the reply slip enclosed the number of teams you wish to enter. I would be grateful if you could fax this back to by Friday 4th December 15. Once I have confirmation of your entry I can then pass on some more details to you. Cluster SSP Final Age Category Year 4/5 General Rules Each team shall consist of approx. 10 team players with at least 2 of whom being girls. Five players will be on the court at any on time (2 girls if possible) Any number of substitutions can be made. Matches will be played on a reduced (half) sized court & Size 5/ junior balls will be used. Matches shall be approximately 10 minutes in duration (rolling clock) All team members shall wear the same colour uniforms. Bibs will be provided if not. The object of the game is to score more baskets than your opponents and to prevent the other team from scoring. The game will start with a jump ball. Each basket will be worth 2 pts. After each successful basket, the opposition shall restart the game from behind the end line. Please adhere to these 4 basic rules: 1. Player & Ball Out of Bounds Rule All players need to keep themselves and the ball inside the court area. 2. Travelling Rule You cannot walk or run holding the ball; so in order to move you must dribble the ball. 3. Illegal Dribble Rule You cannot dribble with two hands at the same time or dribble again after catching the ball. 4. Personal Foul Rule You cannot make unfair contact – a player cannot hold, push, trip or impede the progress of another player. If this is done during the act of shooting, one free throw will be awarded this basket is worth 1pt.
