Book Kit Title: Jumanji
Book Author and Publication: Chris Van Allsburg, 1981
ISNB#: 0395-30448-2
This Book Kit was planned by: Brooke Bergeson
Grade Level this kit is intended for: 3rd grade but can be used for all grades.
Core Curriculum Standard and Objective or NCSS Standard this lesson teaches:
Social Skills: Making Good Choices, following directions
Character Traits: Perseverance, Courage
Materials for the lesson:
JUMANJI by Chris VanAllsburg
Lesson Objective: Students will understand what making good decisions looks like.
Students will be able to discuss what courage and perseverance are.
Background Knowledge: Students should have an idea of what courage and
perseverance are. Students should have some knowledge of what making good
decisions means.
Anticipatory set/Invitation to learn: I will introduce the book by asking the students if their
parents ever left them alone at the house? What did they do? Did they play a board
game? What is their favorite board game? Did any of these games force them to make
decisions? Did they make good decisions or bad ones? Did they take courage or
perseverance? What is courage or perseverance?
Listening Focus: Students should be listening to things that show perseverance,
courage or good decision making skills according to what skill or trait group they are in.
Method for sharing the book: (I will then split the class into 6 groups 2 for each skill or
trait) Now as we are reading this book I want you to listen to things in the story that have
to do with your trait or skill. (I will then read the story without stopping)
Instructional procedures: I will then ask the class what things they found that went along
with their character trait or skill. I will have them brainstorm further with the book in
each of their groups. They will then in their groups reenact (do a skit) the part of the
story that they think bests shows their skill or trait for the class.
Closure: What are some things we can do in our everyday lives to be more like peter
and Judy? How can we make better decisions? Are their ways we can follow directions
better?
Evidence of learning: I will know if students understand the concepts by the scenes they
choose from the book to reenact. I will also know if they understand what those skills
and traits are by how they participate in the closure.
