JAN.28, 6, 2015 2017 TONIGHT’S MATCHUP VS. BEECH GROVE • Tonight’s game is the 50th meeting all-time between Roncalli and Beech Grove. The Rebels lead the all-time series 32-17. • Roncalli has faced Beech Grove more than any other public school. Manual (40 times) is the only other public school that Roncalli has played at least 40 times. The two programs have played every season since the 1991-92 season. • The Rebels have won 10 straight games over the Hornets and six straight at Beech Grove. • Last season, the Rebels defeated the Hornets 59-43 at “The Woodshed.” The Hornets led 18-15 early in the second quarter before the Rebels reeled off 15 straight points. Roncalli led by as much as 23 points (58-35) in the second half. • Beech Grove’s last win over Roncalli was a 70-62 overtime victory at Beech Grove in the opening round of the 2008 Sectional. That Beech Grove team won the program’s most recent sectional title. • The Hornets are 6-3 on the season and have won four straight games. Last week, they won their holiday tournament with wins over New Palestine (76-43) and Tri-West (78-62). TriWest entered that game ranked fifth in the state Class 3A rankings. RONCALLI IN THE INDIANA BASKETBALL HALL OF FAME Bill Green - coached six seasons at Sacred Heart, a forerunner to Roncalli High School, from 1958-59 to 1963-64...won a record six state championships in stops at Indianapolis Washington (1969) and Marion (1975 -1976, 1985-1987)...also coached at Cathedral and the University of Indianapolis...an alumnus of Manual High School (‘52) and Indiana Central College (‘56). BISHOP CHATARD 12/30 • The Rebels won their fourth straight game with a 58-31 win over Bishop Chatard last Friday night at “The Woodshed.” • Roncalli never trailed and led 17-11 after one quarter and 25-16 at the half. The Rebels broke the game open with a 20-4 advantage in the third quarter. The Rebels led by as much as 31 points (58-27) in the final minute. • Christian Stewart led all scorers with 16 points in his 20th consecutive double-figure scoring game. All 13 Rebels who dressed, saw the floor and 10 scored. Collin Sonderman and Bryson Meek each scored seven points and Sonderman pulled down a season-high nine rebounds. • The Rebels shot .512 (22-for-43) from the floor for their third plus .500 shooting game in the last four games. • Roncalli improved its winning streak over Bishop Chatard to 12 games. NOTES • The Rebels had a season-low tying six turnovers in last Friday’s win over Bishop Chatard. They also had six turnovers at Lafayette Central Catholic on December 10. • Over the last four games, the Rebels have taken seven charges. NEXT RONCALLI OPPONENT - PERRY MERIDIAN • The Rebels travel to Perry Meridian to face the Falcons next Tuesday night in the opening round of the Marion County Tournament. • The Rebels opened the season with a 66-41 home win over Perry Meridian on November 26. • Roncalli and Perry Meridian have played four times in the county tournament and the Falcons have won all four meetings. The most recent matchup was a 45-38 Perry Meridian win at Franklin Central in the 2007 quarterfinal round. In the fall of 1969, John F. Kennedy Memorial High School merged with Bishop Chartrand to form Roncalli High School, whose teams would be known as the Rebels. The program’s first home win as the Rebels was a 94-39 victory of the Latin School on December 6, 1969. Over the years, the gym became known as “The Woodshed” due to the cozy and intense atmosphere. The Rebels own an all-time home record of 253-161 (.611) and are 74-15 (.831) at “The Woodshed” since the start of the 2006-07 season. In 14 seasons under head coach Michael Wantz, the Rebels are 93-27 (.775) at home.
