15120-104 Avenue Edmonton, Alberta T5P 0R5 Tel: 489-1981 Fax: 489-1195 www.holycross.ecsd.net Dear Parents/Guardians: As we celebrate Mother’s Day on May 10, let us remember that mothers are God’s gift to humans. They are given the wonderful privilege of participating with God in the creation of new life and bringing hope into the world. A mother not only gives birth, but God entrusts her with the tasks to nurture, feed, teach, guide, and protect her child. Mary, the Mother of Jesus and patroness of Edmonton Catholic Schools, had the sacred purpose of teaching and nurturing Jesus. As mother, she showered her wisdom, love and compassion into the guidance and education of her son. On this special day, may we thank God for the precious gift of our mothers who conceived and gave birth to us, who cared for us, protected us, taught us, and loved us. We give thanks for the many ways we are graced because of all the love, kindness and support they have bestowed upon us. We pray that God will continually bless mothers, grandmothers and those entrusted with this care-giving role. May He grant them immeasurable joy as they share in the lives of their children. May and June are important months for our Grade 6 and 9 students as they write their Provincial Achievement Tests. The schedule is included in our newsletter and on our website. Please make sure your children arrive to school on time and prepared for their exams. Our month of June is busy with celebrations! Thursday, June 4 from 17:0019:00, our School Council is hosting our family BBQ. Please plan to attend! Our Year End Mass will be held on June 10, at 9:15 in our gym. As always, parents and family members are welcome to join us. Denis Gauthier Principal Lynnette Anderson Assistant Principal Education Week May 4-8 “Education week is an opportunity to celebrate the important role that education plays in building our society. The Alberta Teachers’ Association, the Alberta School Boards Association and Alberta Education are working together to help schools, school boards and locals plan activities that send consistent messages about the value of education in the community.” For detailed information on Education Week, check out the Alberta Teachers Association website at: http://www.teachers.ab.ca/Pages/Home.aspx Music The next two months will be exciting for our Music Program! Our PYP students will be beginning a unit in Kodaly method that uses traditional French song and dance to teach ear training, vocabulary, rhythm and spatial awareness. In our MYP program students will be working towards a music showcase that will highlight the best of our music program. Grade 6 will focus on French Canadian step dances as well as an introduction to Band. Grade 7 will work on perfecting one of their band songs as well as starting a unit a unit on Stomp. Grade 8 and Grade 9 will continue to polish their songs in band and will begin a contemporary piece with new instrumentation. We are asking that all instruments be returned to the school by May 8. We will be starting to do an inventory of all instruments and maintenance. This will also help us in ensuring that all students have their instruments for class. If special arrangements are required please contact Julia Tremblay: [email protected] DECC Summit On April 29, students from the leadership team had the opportunity to visit St. Joseph High School where the annual Digitally Engaged Catholic Citizen (DECC) Summit took place. Students listened to teenage presenters who are using their passion for technology to be leaders on both a local and a global scale. Our students also had time to create action plans on how they will take their learnings from the DECC Summit back to our community and to continue the momentum of leadership through technology. Story Telling Circle Thank you to all students who attended the last Story Telling Circle on April 22. We enjoyed hearing Darlene Olsen, Cree Language Consultant, tell the stories "How Chipmunk Got His Stripes" and "Wisakecah Flies to the Moon". Please note that there will be changes in the dates of our next gatherings. The Circle scheduled for May 15 will be happening on May 22 instead. The June 12 Circle is rescheduled for June 5. Grade 9 Farewell Mass We will be holding our Grade 9 Farewell Mass on Thursday, May 28 at 18:30 at St. John the Evangelist Church followed by a reception at the school. A special note to our Grade 9 students who will be moving on next year—thank you for being positive role models for our school. We wish you the best of luck in your new journeys ahead. Many thanks to M. Fairfield for taking the lead in planning this event. Grade 9 Farewell Retreat The Grade 9 students will be having their Farewell Retreat on Friday, May 29 from 8:30 - 14:30 at the Star of the North Retreat Centre in St. Albert. It is a unique place to gather and will be a time for our students to refresh, to gain new perspective on things and to rediscover the sacred dimension of life. Students will be participating in planned activities while enjoying food and camaraderie among friends in this peaceful sacred space. We wish our Grade 9 students a very calming and enlightening day at the Star of the North Retreat! Parents are encouraged to join in the celebration of our athletes. Fête Champêtre This year we are celebrating Fête Champêtre on June 25 with our PYP students. We will be having an outdoor specialist lead the students in creative outdoor games and orienteering. We are so pleased to be able to offer this day in French as our specialist comes to us from Québec! We welcome Pierre-Alexandre and his crew for the day. We will also be selling smoothies during the day for $2 each in support of the Sign of Hope! Please dress your children for a day of outdoor activities! Important Reminders Parents of students starting Grade 1 in September need to fill out new applications for busing (yellow form) which can be picked up at our office. Students who did not take the bus this year and would like to take the bus next year, please pick up the yellow form at our office. Late School Buses If you have any issues with the buses running late or not showing up please contact: Transportation Services @ 780-411-6078. Their office is open at 7:30. Rules of the Road Our children’s safety is our primary concern! Please use extra caution when you’re driving past the school building or the grounds during recess and while children are going to or leaving school. Please do not make illegal U-Turns or park directly on the crosswalks. Please park in the appropriate spots and walk your children to the door. Thank you for your attention. Processional Cross The arrival of the Fr. Michael Mireau Cross was very special for our community, as our school derives its name from the Holy Cross. We began with a special morning prayer and a reflection on the significance of the Cross for Christians. It is the perfect display of God’s mercy and love. It enables us to live as people of hope, because we know that God’s grace is more powerful than anything (even Superman)! Christ defeated sin and death on the cross by his sacrifice, and Father Catfish devoted his life to telling people about this good news –we were all blessed to have him work with our schools. Staff, students and visitors to Holy Cross had the opportunity to visit the Travelling Cross during the day in a central area of the school. Some of our Grade 3 students who had a special connection to Fr. Mike posed for a picture with the Cross, which you can see on this page. Talent Show Holy Cross Académie Internationale hosted our annual Talent Show on Thursday, March 26th. We enjoyed an afternoon of amazing performances. It was a wonderful opportunity for our entire community to come together to celebrate our students' many talents. We want to thank all the students for their time and effort in preparing their acts. Congratulations to the winners of the talent show: Victoria. K (1st place) shared her beautiful voice with the song "Alleluia". Ryker H. and Jean-Luc. Important News from St. John the Evangelist Parish As part of your child’s ongoing faith development, it is important for them to prepare for and receive the Sacraments of the Church. Typically we do preparation for First Reconciliation and First Communion in Grade 2 (age 7+) and Confirmation in Grade 6 (age 11+). Please contact the parish office at 780-452-3988 to register your children as soon as possible. We are beginning a new process of preparing the children for the sacraments. After the initial contact with the office staff we will set up a meeting time for the child and parent to meet with the pastoral assistant to discuss our expectations and format of sacramental preparation. The programs will begin in January. Please note there is a parent meeting prior to the start of the programs; the date and time to be determined. Once the sessions begin, new registrations will not be accepted for the current year. We will require a photocopy of your child’s baptismal certificate as part of the registration process. If you have any children older than the “typical” ages for our programs who have not yet prepared for and/or received these sacraments, please contact us and we will be able to help the children to prepare and receive the Sacraments. If you have any questions at all, please do not hesitate to call us.
