The Road to Finals!
The 2009/10 season is heating up and there is still a lot of
opportunity for the Boys of Brens to be in the mix come March.
Getting along to training will be vital to work on the areas you
need improvement and get some advice from senior players.
Another important thing is availability – selection becomes all
the more important in the lead up to finals so make sure the
selection committee are aware of your movements.
There hasn’t been a flag for a while down at Parkville so be
sure to support those teams that do make it and we can all
celebrate if we get across the line
There are some key dates coming up that you may want to put
into the calendar:
•
•
•
•
•
27th of February – last round of VTCA cricket
27th of February – Themed Dinner held at the Clyde
Hotel (details to be announced)
6th of March – Last round of MCA, Finals begin for VTCA
13th March – Finals begin for MCA
18th of April – Presentation lunch held at the Clyde Hotel
3rd XI out to take the flag
After cruelly missing out on the final last year due to weather –
JB wants to make sure that this won’t be the case this year and
will do all he can to get the 3rds into the top 2. Sitting just
behind Hydro Flow in 3rd place they are looking in good shape.
With big games coming up they will look to take the maximum
from all encounters.
The 1st XI has continued the ups and downs of the season.
With some great victories over Sunshine United and Hoppers
Crossing in the one day format, it has been the 2 dayers that
have really hurt – none more so than the agonisingly close
match last round where they came up 5 runs short after a
valiant run chase – spearheaded by Peachy (94). The 1s sit in
6th place and still have a mathematical chance of making it.
After the heady heights of first place early in the season the 2nd
XI slumped a little losing a few on the trot and slipping to 7th.
After a big win over Westmeadows (a match they nearly
produced an outright and a reverse outright) they have moved
to 5th and sit just outside the 4. Hopefully Dutto and the boys
can lift in the last two rounds and have a crack at the flag in
March.
The 4th XI have struggled this year in the C grade with avaliabilities once
again proving to be costly. They are however on the back of a recent win
which produced an exciting day of cricket. Needing quick runs to have a
chance of an outright they looked to Captain Mac Dalton who blazed away
to get 88*, the bowlers then backed it up and took 9 wickets – unlucky to
not get the 10th and exact the outright. The 4s are sitting in 7th place with
the finals out of reach.
The 5th XI however have managed to stay in the hunt and currently sit in
5th and will need to notch up a couple more wins to creep into the 4 and
make a play for the flag. Stu Mills is proving to be solid with the bat
notching up 152 runs at an average of 76. Yoongy continues the form with
the ball and leads the 5ths with 14 wickets. In the most recent game
stand in captain Jeremy “Tobes” Tobin smashed a fine 112 to set up the
much needed victory!
Leading Players
Batting:
1st XI captain Phil Lang leads the clubs batting stakes after a
few decent knocks – his knees have given way and he has to
stand down for a couple of recent matches but will hopefully
make it back to take the helm for the final round. PDCC
stalwart Mark ‘Shrek’ Fini continues his consistent form in the
3s – hoepfully he can notch some runs up in the finals to
claim the flag….and finally retire.

Bowling:
Greeny continues the good form with the ball taking 30
wickets so far this season at a very tidy 13.97 average. So far
he has taken 2 fivefas and 1 10 wicket match. Lloydy is also
doing loads of damage for the 4s with a recent match
performance of 8/53. Jonesey is proving to be Mr Economical
with an economy rate sitting under 3.

MCA 20/20 Tournament
In early January the MCA Parkville 20/20 team made
their way to Fawkner Park to defend their title. With 2
games to play they needed to come out firing and thanks
to Greeny, that’s exactly what they did
In a fiery and extremely rapid spell of four overs, Greeny took 4/3 which
included a hat trick – a fantastic effort and it was well backed up by big
Cal McKern. Other good efforts were from Vers (taking 2 wickets) and
Gonzo who was very miserly. National got to 104 losing their last wicket
on the last ball.
The run chase stumbled a little with 2 quick wickets falling but Vers (29)
was on hand to steady the ship and provide several lusty blows – with his
departure Tex (38*) and Daino (18*) took over to get the lads over the
line. Some good hitting, good running and effective use of the pads meant
that the game was always in Parkville’s hands.
The next game was a bit tougher coming up against the A grade team of
Burnley but the batting was steady with all chipping in to set a very solid
target 143
The run chase by Burnely started rapidly and after 10 overs they were 0 –
88. Enter to the crease (in a last ditch attempt by Tex) Fini who provided
the spark needed if there was going to be any hope of winning. Fini’s four
overs produced 4/14 which included a spectacular one armed caught and
bowled. However it was too little too late and in the 19th over Burnely got
over the line. Unfortunately the wombats weren’t able to make it through
to the finals but will look to 2011 to exact revenge.
Good Sports Initiative
Parkville District Cricket Club are proud to announce they
have become Level 1 Accredited Good Sports Club The

research. The program is evidence-based and evaluation continues on an
on-going basis.
Displaying the Good Sports logo sends an important message to club
members and the community. It confirms that the club promotes a
responsible attitude towards alcohol and that it provides a safe
environment for players, members, families and supporters. Head to

Samoa 7’s
Every year Jason Evans (formerly of Sacred Heart - now with Cricket
Samoa) runs a 7's tournament to raise funds for a charity. It is a great
day out and provides an opportunity to have some good fun on and off the
pitch. Last year the tournament was to raise funds for the Bushfire Appeal
- this year the funds will go to Samoa to help them build and sustain
cricket in the Pacific.
Last year the boys made it to the semi- final and were unlucky not to
make it through after losing in a dead heat bowl off. This year there is a
lot more focus on the social side and there will be raffles and auctions run
throughout the day. Parkville will be sending their team – this year
dubbed “the fat arsed wombats” to vie for the prize. It will be a great day
out and family, friends and spectators are all welcome

Fantasy League
The Fantasy League has winded up with Beeper taking the glory – his
team ‘Anger Management’ topped the rankings and netted Beeper the
prize. Shiellys “DeathbySnooSnoo” came in 2nd with Mac’s “Kiwis flying
might beat them all” sneaking into 3rd place.
Simon Gaymer
The Wombat recently took some time out to chat with
Parkville Districts king of spin Simon Gaymer – Gaymer
has been a stalwart of the club and has proven to be one
of the most successful bowlers in the club and in the
VTCA competition. The 1st XI have called on Gaymer
numerous times to stem the run flow and to take vital
wickets. Gaymer has seen it all and has been at the club
long before we became the mighty wombats.
When did you begin playing for the wombats?
I began playing for the wombats well before we embraced the wombat as
our mascot. It was season 1989/90 and at that time two clubs shared the
Brens Pavillion - Melbourne Central CC and North Old Boys CC. I joined
Melbourne Central, which was eventually to merge with North Old Boys
and form PDCC - the mighty wombats.
Highest score/Best bowling?
Testing the memory, as my glory days were obviously before Results
Vault was around. I think I took an 8/100 odd in the late 1990s (in a
game we lost by about 100 runs!). Best bowling performance was a 6/40
odd versus East Keilor that got us into a grand final in 2002/03 or
thereabouts. Highest score was 64 as nightwatchman vs Sunshine YCW
about 10 years ago. (Dropped four times I think and out to a loopy full
toss from a spinner I hit straight up in the air, with thoughts of 100 in my
mind!)
Best sporting memory from Parkville District?
I have had so many great times with PDCC it is hard to pick one. The
biggest regret is playing four semi-finals, two grand finals but no
premierships, but the second grand final vs Strathmore was such a great
game, over four tough days, and with two hours to go we were 3/120 odd
trying to chase down 210, but alas, we weren't good enough on the day.
A great team we had that year, and despite the disappointment of losing,
it was a great year to play for the mighty wombats.
Who is your most respected Parkville player?
The player I have most respected at Parkville, by a long way, is Allan
Joseland. To start with, he had immense talent - bat, ball and in the
field. But despite being the most talented player in the team (and
generally in the match), he would also be the hardest working, best
prepared, deepest thinking and most encouraging to his team mates.
Many a time playing with Al, just as energy levels were dropping and
spirits were sagging, he would pipe up from mid-off with loud (often semifunny) encouragement - ball after ball - until he had dragged the team
spirit with him to the next level. It is rare that the most talented player is
also the hardest working, but Al was the complete package in every way.
His only weakness as a cricketer was that when choosing heads or tails at
the toss, he insisted that whoever was captain looked at the tilt of the
coin at the toss, and selected accordingly. If the coin tilted towards the
tosser, you had to choose the top side, if it tilted away; you had to choose
the bottom side. The rationale was that this meant you were choosing the
side which was facing up slightly more often during the complete
trajectory of the flip, and increased chances of winning the toss. This
created great angst for all involved.
Occupation?
Current occupation is as a market intelligence manager for the Public
Transport Division of the State Government Department of Transport.
This involves gathering data on the customer experience of public
transport in Victoria (always interesting!) and trying to forecast customer
travel behaviour change in the next 20 years to allow forward planning.
What will you be doing in 20 years?
Dreaming of a Wombat premiership!
Lookalikes
After the hype Melbourne experienced with Prince William coming to town,
there have been rumours that Prince Harry is also gracing our presence.
It’s highly likely however that they found themselves confused with
resident royal Andrew Deery. It may also explain Deery’s recent spike in
dating and interest from local females.
