Course Description:
This course is an introduction to basic nursing concepts and skills. Nurses today must be able to
grow in order to meet the demands of a dramatically changing health care system. They need to
utilize the nursing process, evidence-based practice; students learn the specific concepts needed in
the planning of nursing care addressing a client’s cognitive, interpersonal, psychomotor skills,
psychosocial and developmental needs, protection, safety and basic physiologic needs.
Specific Course Objectives :
1. Recognize the health/wellness continuum and the different health care delivery systems
&incorporating ethical and legal nursing principles.
2. Discuss the nursing process in terms of critical thinking, nursing
Judgment, documentation and client education.
3. Describe nursing practice principles that incorporate infection control, vital signs, health
assessment, physical examination, medication administration, fluid, electrolyte and acid-base
balances.
4. Acknowledge caring principles in nursing practice that include the concepts of cultural diversity,
spirituality, growth and development, self concept/sexuality, family& stress and grief.
5. Identify caring for basic human needs as they relate to Maslow’s
Hierarchy.
6. Explain caring for client’s special needs of immobility, skin and wound care, sensory alterations
and the surgical client.

Course Intended Learning Outcomes (ILOs):
After completion of this course the student will be able to:A. Discuss nursing, health and illness, and health care delivery in the past, present and future from
a nursing perspective.
B. Develop an understanding of nursing focusing on the basic concepts, skills, and legal ethical
elements of nursing practice
.
C. Identify and utilize the components of the nursing process in the delivery of safe, responsible
health care.
D. Explain the importance of the following in the delivering of competent nursing care: nurseclient relationship, therapeutic communication, principles of reporting and documentation, and
teaching/learning strategies.
E. Discuss essential concepts related to the psychosocial and developmental needs of clients across
the lifespan

Course Policies :
Assignments:
All assignments are to be completed prior to class. Unannounced quizzes may cover
reading material assigned for that class day that has yet to be covered.
Attendance policy:
Attendance is mandatory. Students are expected to attend all classes. Classes will start on time
and end on time. All students are expected to be prompt. Arrangements must be made with the
course coordinator prior to absence. All cases of absence shall be promptly reported to the
coordinator by phone or in writing. Absence for any part of a day will be recorded as a full
day's absence.
Students are expected to be present and on time for examinations. Even that a student misses an
exam due to illness or an emergency, the following policy will be followed:
a) Student must notify the course coordinator prior to the time the exam is scheduled.
b) Arrangements will be made between student and faculty to make up. (In case of accepted
excuse)
c) The student who misses an examination without informing the course coordinator or another
faculty member prior to the exam will receive a zero (0).
