In-house Option for Credit Unions in ACCUP 2012
The ILCU Training Department continues to develop the ACCUP programme in line with the needs of
credit unions and their officers. Feedback from a recent survey of credit unions indicated that the
convenience of a tutorial location is a significant consideration when deciding on training courses for
their employees and volunteers.
ACCUP currently runs tutorials in over 27 locations across the island of Ireland; however it is not
always possible to have a local venue for every credit union. As ACCUP is an important qualification
for volunteers and staff, it is unfortunate that such a factor would prevent a person from
undertaking the course.
In response to this, the ILCU Training Department will be offering credit unions the opportunity to
undertake the ACCUP programme in their own credit union, on a day that suits them best!
How Does the In-House ACCUP Option Work?
If a credit union or group of local credit unions has a sufficient number of students who undertake
the Advanced Certificate in Credit Union Practice in January 2012, they may nominate a suitable
credit union office to hold all of the tutorials.
An in-house tutorial venue will benefit both the participating students through the convenience of a
local venue and the credit union through a reduction in travel expenses.
In order for the in-house session to be viable, a group size of between 16-22 participants (which
must consist of a minimum of either 6 students undertaking the volunteer stream or 6 students
undertaking the staff stream) is required. If the 16-22 participants are entirely made up of
studentsundertaking one of the streams (e.g. all credit union staff members), this is also acceptable.
Further details which should be considered are listed in the section below.
It is suggested that a Training Liaison Officer or the Chapter Training Officer would be a suitable
person to determine the level of interest in this option and to coordinate the selection of a suitable
venue and complete the necessary paperwork. In order for the ILCU Training Department to
accommodate a credit union or group of credit unions, the enclosed in-house request form with all
accompanying student application forms must be submitted by post before Friday 4th November
2011. The coordinator does not need to worry about organising payment. If the student opts to pay
by cheque, this must be included with their application form; alternatively they may opt for payment
via invoice which will not require any payment upon application.
Please note that if you cannot get the sufficient number of students for an in-house session, we will
continue to deliver the ACCUP programme in a number of regional venues across the country.
Further Details
In order to ensure the quality of ACCUP tutorials is maintained, the following factors should be
considered when selecting the venue:
The training room or board room for the tutorial must comfortably seat the full number of
students in the group.
The training room or board room must have tables for the students
The training room or board room must have a screen (which will permit the projection of a
PowerPoint presentation), a flip-chart with paper, suitable lighting and ventilation, and
access to plug sockets for a lap-top and projector.
The credit union building must have adequate toilet facilities, parking facilities (or access to
nearby public parking), kitchen facilities and clear access into the room for students (in order
words, access to the room cannot be restricted for parts of the day).
If one of the students in the group has physical access requirements, the building must be
suitable for their needs.
The building must be compliant with the relevant fire regulations, e.g. there is a clear
evacuation route from the training room.
The training room must be available on Saturdays and weekdays {the day of the week can be
specified by the credit union(s)}.
A designated officer of the credit union (other than those attending the tutorial) must be on
site in the morning and evening of the tutorial and be contactable during the day.
Only one venue can be nominated, a rotation of the location for each module will not be
workable.
The venue must provide refreshments (tea, coffee and biscuits) and a light lunch
(sandwiches, tea and coffee) on the day of the tutorial.
The ILCU will reimburse the credit union for all lunch and refreshment expenses. The credit
union cannot charge a fee for the use of the venue as it will be treated as an in-house
session.
Where there is space available in a class, the ILCU reserves the right to fill these places with
participants from outside the credit union or group of credit union.
