Israeli and Palestinian Conflict Adapted from Jen Levin

AP Human Geography Culture/Political Unit: Mrs. Melton
Essential Questions:
1.
How can the conflict between Israel and Palestine be resolved?
2.
Can there be peace between the two?
Collaborating in a group of four/five, your mission is to prepare a
PowerPoint presentation on how to resolve the perpetual conflict
between Israel and Palestine to the United Nation's Security Council.
There are six specific perspectives that each of you will individually select
from and research. Whatever perspective each individual opts to
research, they will become the expert on that view and responsible for
disseminating and instructing the other group members of that
individual's position.
After each perspective has been researched and discussed, your group will
create a Power Point presentation on how you would resolve the IsraeliPalestinian Conflict to the United Nations. There is a rubric that will
delineate how your presentation will be assessed. Good luck!

You will select one of the six perspectives listed. Each has its own perspective on
the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict. You will investigate what that individual's
perspective to the conflict is and then share it to your group. Each student will fill
out the Perspective Handout, answering all the questions, as well as maintain a
journal for reflections on what you are researching for your perspective. Your
journal must not be more than 2pages in length.

After all members have shared their specific perspectives, together, you will all
decide on how you will find a resolution to the conflict. Consider all perspectives
and decide on what the best solution locally, nationally, regionally, and globally is.
When a decision has been devised, your group will create a PowerPoint
presentation to deliver to the United Nation's Security Council. This address must
be persuasive so ascertain your proposal is intriguing and provocative.

You will be evaluated on the following:
a. your journal
b. your Individual Perspective Handout
c. Group’s Assessment of Each Individual
d. your group's Power Point presentation to resolve the conflict

Select a Perspective
1.An Israeli Soldier
2.A Palestinian Militant
3.Israeli Prime Minister
4. Palestinian Prime
Minister
5. An Israeli Holocaust
survivor that now resides
in Israel
6. A Palestinian Refugee
living in Palestinian
occupied areas





After you selected a perspective, there are several questions you
must answer surrounding the individual you selected. The handout
is entitled, The Student Perspective. You must analyze,
synthesize, and apply the information you research to answer the
questions. Sometimes there will not be an absolute answer;
therefore, you must support all your responses using research from
the provided sources (See Next Slide)
Is it a Pro-Israeli site?
Is it a Pro-Palestinian site?
Is it being used as propaganda?
If the reading or video is partial to one side?
Please keep these questions in mind.


Maintain a Journal
You will keep a journal writing about the following:
1. What emotions or feeling do you have surrounding this conflict before, during,
and after your investigation?
2. How did you individually believe the conflict should be resolved and why?
3. While you researched your perspective, what information appealed the most to
you and why?
4. Were you biased while you were researching this topic and if so, how did it
influence your position? If you weren't biased, did you find as you were researching
you were becoming partial and if so, why? If you were not biased, nor became
biased, how did you arrive at your position to resolving this conflict?
5. How difficult was it to find impartial information? Elaborate by providing three
specific examples.
6. Did you agree with your group's final decision on how to resolve the conflict?
Why or why not?
7. Did you feel that your group worked well together and everyone participated
equally? Why or why not?
Your journal should be no more than2pages in length. Double spaced using 12 point size
font.
Create A Power Point Presentation

After sharing and discussing each group member's researched perspective, your
group will decide how to resolve this conflict to create a power point presentation to
be addressed to the United Nation's Security Council. Be cognizant that your solution
should consider local, regional, and global concerns. Ensure your proposal is based
upon accurate data.

Your presentation should be riveting, persuasive, and appealing to your audience.
a. How did Israel come into being?
b. What is a brief history of the conflict? Include the main wars, what they were
about, who won, and what was the end result of each. Please acknowledge recent
activity as well.
c. What role does terrorism play in this conflict? Who are the terrorists? What do
they want? What have they done? How has Israel responded?
d. Which countries support Palestine and which support Israel? Why?
e. Where are valuable resources located in Israel? Should this be considered when
developing your Plan of Action in ending this conflict? Why?
f. What is the best solution that will be safe and fair for both sides?
g. Who should be responsible for executing this plan?
h. How will each side be accountable for ensuring your plan will be honored and
actualized?
Your evaluations will be based upon four rubrics:

Individual Rubrics: (Total of 3 rubrics)
 Student Perspective Handout Rubric
 Journal Entry Rubric
 Group’s Assessment of Each Individual

Group Presentation Rubric:
Please read them carefully so you are aware of how you are being assessed.

Power Point. The
The Israeli/Palestinian conflict has been a tumultuous, incessant,
and perpetual dilemma that has at this time, not been resolved.
It's conflict surpasses its borders and permeates into the global
arena. Many partially assign this raging struggle to the terrorism
plaguing the world today and believe that a peaceful resolution to
this conflict will create sustainable peace throughout the entire
Middle East. This conflict is complex, rooted in religious, political,
economic, social, and cultural rationales, sentiments, and history.
After you researched the origins of the conflict and how it has
evolved, you have found that there are no simple answers to satisfy
all stakeholders (locally, regionally, and globally). This conflict may
exacerbate or end in your lifetime.
Did you find a resolution to the conflict?
Do you think there ever will be peace between
the two?
Can there be peace in the Middle East?
