The topic was the SDPD’s policies for treatment of immigrants. Our group of 20 People Power reps from all over the city did a marvelous job of outlining concerns, and asking for commitments. And Chief Zimmerman did a marvelous job of deflecting most of our requests. No surprise there. Still, we have a commitment from her to stay in communication. Most importantly, we made ourselves heard, and she now understands that we are in this for the long haul, and are a force to be reckoned with. Detailed notes from the meeting will be available on http://sddocs.org in the next few days. City Council Budget: Thanks to efforts by many of you, the City Council voted to allocate $100,000 to fund a national search for a new police chief. Hurray! County Board of Supervisors: Despite the best efforts of community activists, the County Board of Supervisors approved the appointment of Summer Stephan as interim D.A. Promoting City Council endorsement of SB 54 and SB 31: Over the next 4 – 8 weeks, we plant to meet with City Council representatives and Mayor Faulconer to urge passage of a resolution in support of SB 54 and SB 31. Script: Hello, my name is ___ and I am calling to ask for your support for SB 54, the California Values Act. This Act will protect the safety and well being of all Californians by limiting state and local resources from fueling mass deportations, separating families or terrorizing our communities. California must stand with immigrants, and not with the forces that are colluding with Trump’s anti-immigrant agenda.
