Actions for the coming week.
1. Stop Trumpcare! The U.S. Senate has finally lifted the veil of secrecy from their
health care machinations. And it's clear why they wanted to keep it a secret! The
Senate vote will occur sometime next week (week of 6/26), so we have to act
fast!

June 17 Meeting summary
SDPD Meeting: A meeting between People Power and the San Diego Police
Department’s Chief Zimmerman and staff FINALLY took place on June 20. The topic
was the SDPD’s policies for treatment of immigrants. Our group of 20 People Power
reps from all over the city did a marvelous job of outlining concerns, and asking for
commitments. And Chief Zimmerman did a marvelous job of deflecting most of our
requests. No surprise there. Still, we have a commitment from her to stay in
communication. Most importantly, we made ourselves heard, and she now understands
that we are in this for the long haul, and are a force to be reckoned with. Detailed notes
from the meeting will be available on http://sddocs.org in the next few days.
City Council Budget: Thanks to efforts by many of you, the City Council voted to
allocate $100,000 to fund a national search for a new police chief. Hurray!
County Board of Supervisors: Despite the best efforts of community activists, the
County Board of Supervisors approved the appointment of Summer Stephan as interim
D.A.
Promoting City Council endorsement of SB 54 and SB 31: Over the next 4 – 8
weeks, we plant to meet with City Council representatives and Mayor Faulconer to urge
passage of a resolution in support of SB 54 and SB 31. Please contact us at
[email protected], or we will be contacting you to see if you are interested in
participating. Summaries of these bills are available at
http://sddocs.org/docs/CA_bills.docx
Next meeting will be scheduled for 7/30 or 8/12, with invited speaker from immigrant
rights/policy organization. Stay tuned!
Help coordinate progressive actions in San Diego: If you are involved with other
progressive groups (Indivisible, Swing Left, etc., and would like to serve as a liaison with
People Power, please contact us at [email protected]. This will assist with better
coordination of meeting and event planning, rapid response actions and more.

Script:
Hello, my name is ___ and I am calling to ask for your support for SB 54, the
California Values Act. This Act will protect the safety and well being of all
Californians by limiting state and local resources from fueling mass deportations,
separating families or terrorizing our communities. California must stand with
immigrants, and not with the forces that are colluding with Trump’s anti-immigrant
agenda.
