Adlerian Play Therapy and Family Play Therapy Dr Terry Kottman Dates: 10th – 13th April 2017 Cost: €550 In this fun, interactive, and experiential workshop, Terry Kottman, the "inventor" of Adlerian play therapy, will introduce you to Adlerian play therapy and Adlerian Family Play Therapy, integrating the concepts and techniques of Individual Psychology with the practice of play therapy and family play therapy. In Adlerian play therapy and Adlerian family play therapy, therapists use the concepts of Alfred Adler’s Individual Psychology to conceptualize clients--children, siblings, and their parents and teachers, while using toys, art, play material, and metacommunication to connect with them. The process of co-creating a relationship with the child and other members of the child’s family through play allows therapists to communicate (mostly through metaphor, but sometimes through direct verbal interaction) in a way that facilitates exploration of the family members’ patterns of thinking, feeling, and behaving, helps the members of the family gain insight into those patterns, and invites family members to make changes in any patterns that are self-defeating or destructive. Engaging the child’s parents and teachers, exploring their own lifestyles and their interaction with the child, helping them to understand the child’s patterns, and teaching them skills for improving the relationship is an integral part of the custom-designed parent and teacher consultation component of Adlerian play therapy. In this fun, interactive, and experiential workshop, participants will learn techniques for establishing relationships with children and other members of their families, exploring family members’ life-styles, helping family members gain insight into their lifestyles, and reorienting and reeducating family members. The presenter will introduce the participants to several of the unique ways that Adlerians conceptualize children and the significant people in their lives: goals of misbehavior, the Crucial Cs, and personality priorities. We will explore play therapy strategies, active games, art techniques, metaphors, and storytelling strategies for working with a wide range of clients. You will learn activities to involve the various members of a family in play therapy and use the power of play to help them communicate more clearly, strengthen relationships, and solve problems more efficiently. Learning Objectives After the workshop, participants will be able to explain the rationale for Adlerian family play therapy and, in relation to Adlerian play therapy and family play therapy, describe: • • • • • 3 basic concepts of Individual Psychology 5 family play therapy techniques 5 active games for family sessions 5 art techniques to use in family play therapy 3 Adlerian concepts they could use to understand family members • 5 strategies for building a relationship with the child and other members of the child’s family • 5 strategies for exploring the lifestyles of the child and other members of the child’s family • 3 strategies for helping the child and other family members gain insight into their lifestyles • 3 strategies for reorientation/reeducation of the child and other members of the child’s family • 5 strategies for consulting with parents and teachers Terry Kottman, Ph.D., RPT-S, LMHC, NCC, is the "inventor" of Adlerian play therapy.
