While communication technologies are
continuously developing, not all voices are
being heard.
Explicit efforts to ensure that all communities
have a voice on the global stage are essential
to creating thriving and resilient communities.
While these initiatives have softer results than
many other efforts, in an age where
information is power, communities that feel
unheard or misrepresented will become
increasingly frustrated and confrontational.

Players suggested a host of ways to amplify storytelling efforts, such as
extending the StoryCorps model to marginalized communities around world.
Others thought that adding foresight methodologies could add a layer of
community organizing and strategic thinking to the power of storytelling as well.
Some players suggested pragmatic approaches—providing tools to record and
share stories, designing storytelling projects that span multiple media platforms for
increased reach and access, and building platforms to map ideas and make
storytelling fruitful. Others also suggested using storytelling techniques as a
cautionary tale to prevent crime.

StoryCorps
Villages in Action
StoryCorps aims “to provide
Americans of all backgrounds and
beliefs with the opportunity to record,
share, and preserve the stories of
our lives.”
Villages in Action was founded by Ugandan
activist TMS Ruge in 2010. Frustrated at how
the millennium development goals, while
focused entirely on poor and vulnerable
communities, seemed to be leaving them
entirely out of the conversation, he decided to
bring the microphone directly to the people.

Global Lives is a not-for-profit volunteer organization creating a video archive of
human life around the world. With 24-hour-long videos, people can explore a dayin-the-life view of people from around the world, including Japan, Malawi, China,
and beyond.
