INFORMATION FOR SCHOOLS
Learn about food waste with a free, fun interactive digital
display at the Adelaide Central Market!
Visiting ‘The General Story’ display at the Adelaide Central Market is a fun, innovative and
interactive way for students to learn more about the issue of food waste through the experiences of
everyday food items found in the fridge or pantry, as well as common ways to avoid food waste.
Your students can meet and interact with the digital characters Milk, Bread, Banana, Eggplant and
Lamb Chop. They will discover information about where and how each is grown and made, how
much energy and water is used to grow them and why they often get wasted.
Food waste is a big issue in Australia. The average Australian family throws out up to 20% of the food
they buy – that’s over $1000 a year! All that wasted food means more landfill - and that the
resources, water, emissions and energy used to make it are also wasted. Reducing food waste is an
important and practical way we can all help the environment and reduce carbon emissions.
The General Story is located in the Adelaide Central Market and is open during normal market
trading hours.
It is delivered as part of the Carbon Neutral Adelaide initiative and is a collaboration between the
Smart City Studio, OzHarvest, the Central Market Authority and Carbon Neutral Adelaide.
