Apprenticeships
• Generally take between one and three years to complete
• Most training takes place in the work place
• Day or block release to gain qualifications
•Example…
Typical example
Higher Apprenticeship – Civil (Track) Engineering Apprentice
Spending one day a week at Leeds College of Building, you’ll
study towards a HNC Level 4 in Civil Engineering. You’ll also
become a Technician Member of the Institute of Civil
Engineers. Then when you finish your apprenticeship, you’ll
be ready to continue your career in Civil Engineering or go on
to further study, potentially leading to Chartered Engineer
status.

Beyond Sixth FORM…
COLLEGE…
• HE Colleges such as Yorkshire Coast and York.
• Courses are generally free if you start the course before
you are 19.
• Courses are often related to a specific vocation and are
seen as a stepping stone to either degree courses or
apprenticeships in that field.
For example…
• Art and Design Diploma in Foundation Studies Post Level
3 at York College.
• Normally requires 1 A Level and 6 grade C GCSEs or
equivalents.
• Seen as a good foundation prior to a degree course in a
related field such as graphic or fashion design.
APPLICATION
• Applications are normally made in the spring of Year 13.
• We help students to complete the form and provide a
reference.

UNIVERSITY
Encourage ALL students to aspire to…
Education for its own sake…
…investing in the future / ‘Debt’?
Life long learning!
Make the right choices
Make the right choices
Which course / university?
Will I gain employment?
What is the night life like?
What are the fees?
How do you pay for university?
How do you pay for university?
The student loans company pays £9000 (it can be less) per
year straight to the university on a student’s behalf.
This is called a tuition fee.
How do you pay for university?
Secondly students need some money
to live on.
The amount you get to live on varies
depending on your parents income.
This year = £8430(outside London)
How do you pay for university?
• Paid part time work and summer jobs
• Bank loans and overdrafts
• Bursaries and sponsorship
• Contributions from family
How do you pay for university?
It is unlikely that many graduates will actually pay back everything they
owe… £50,000 from the student loans company would not be paid back
even if you earned £40,000 for every one of the 30 years after you
graduated.
The good news is that you don’t have to…after 30 years or if your income
drops below £21000 you stop having to pay it back.
The 40k graduate above would pay about £32 per week as a result of his/her
time at university (a worst case scenario).
