Observer STATE LINE OBSERVER ■ JUNE 8, 2016 5 Formerly Normal Players take to the stage Sunday at Opera House One-act play begins at 3 p.m. The Formerly Normal Players will present the one-act play “Home Again” at 3 p.m. Sunday on the stage of the Ginnivan Auditorium in Fayette’s Opera House. The original play is inspired by the lives and contributions of six former residents who called Fayette home and have been laid to rest in Fayette’s Pleasant View Union Cemetery on the west side of town. The script was written, in part, by the student actors and edited by the entire ensemble. The production looks at the lives of Civil War veteran Colonel John H. Wickhiser; Fayette physician Estell Rorick, one of the founders of Fayette Normal University; theater pioneer Norma Ginnivan; child actor, musician and former Fayette Manufacturing engineer, Bud Walker; and student athlete Fred H. “Pug” Pierce and his mother, Sophie. “The play explores the roles these individuals played in the development of some of the defining episodes in Fayette’s history,” said Tom Spiess. The name of the theater troupe is a revival of the Formerly Normal Players who staged plays at the Opera House during the 1980s and 1990s. The Formerly Normal Players’ productions were a collaborative effort featuring local and area high school students under the direction of area college professors. The “Normal” is a reference to the former Fayette Normal College of Music. The 2016 edition of the Formerly Normal Players includes Kaleb Bates as Dr. Estell Rorick, Mackalyn Figgins as Norma Ginnivan and Sophie Pierce, Mason Maginn as Fred Pierce, and Jonah Purdue as both Colonel Wickhiser and Bud Walker. Jason Stuckey runs the lights for the play. The play is produced as a part of the Fayette’s Summer Reading program gets underway This year’s theme for the Summer Reading Program at Fayette’s Normal Memorial Library is “On Your Mark, Get Set, Read!” The program runs June 21 to July 28 and will be sports-oriented.
