Funders of Play - Inspiring Scotland

Funders of Play
A guide to foundations,
trusts and charities who
support play in Scotland.
Introduction
The following guide contains eligibility, priority and contact details
of organisations funding not-for-profit and charitable organisations
in Scotland. It has been compiled for Inspiring Scotland’s Go2Play
programme and therefore focusses on potential funders of play
activities.
Funders have been selected through a review of SCVO’s ‘Scottish Directory of Funding for Third Sector
Organisations’ and a web-based search. It is not a definitive list and there are likely some omissions. It
is important to note that Funders have not been spoken to directly so information is as up-to-date as
current web information in February, 2016. It is recommended that the guide is used for information
only and where possible contact is made directly with each organisation to ascertain current funding
criteria.
Advertised funding criteria have been reviewed for the potential for organisations facilitating different
types play activity to seek funds. In line with the activities of current Go2Play the types of play activities
have been divided into play sessions, play training, play resources and play spaces. The potential for
funding has then been graded as per the table below.
Potential funds for:
PS – Play sessions: including one-off play events,
regular play groups and play ranger activity
PT – Play training: including training for volunteers
and staff to facilitate play and activities raising
awareness of play
PR – Play resources: including funds for
purchase of equipment to use in play
PSp – Play spaces: including play parks and
community leisure spaces
Play and children and families or
communities indicated as a priority
Play not specifically mentioned, but not excluded or;
other particular requirements to be met or;
general information on funding priorities
Some types of play activity excluded and;
other major requirements to be met.
Information on particular priority groups for that Funder and required outcomes as a result of funded
activity has also been included, where this information is available. In general, the majority of Funders
are interested in meeting a defined need and overcoming disadvantage. It is therefore important for
organisations seeking funds to make clear the disadvantage beneficiaries of their work face. For play
organisations this includes outlining some of the effects if children are denied good play opportunities.
Pages 11-14 have a list of ‘General Funders’. These are Trusts and Foundations which have very open
funding criteria. There is not sufficient information available on the web to determine how likely they
are to fund play activity, however they are current and therefore another potential source of funds.
Page 15 has a list of currently closed funds. They have however previously funded play type activity or
indicate that children, young people, families and communities have been priority groups. They are
therefore included to review for future possibilities.
An Appendix document also lists and categorises potential funders that fund specific geographic
communities.

Below is a list of Trusts and Foundations that, at the time of compiling, advertised very
general funding criteria and guidance for applying. All are current in that they submitted
OSCR returns which indicated some donations in the last financial year, however it is
not clear in some cases HOW, or how often, they make these donations. Some require a
written application and have no deadline dates, whilst others advertise contact details for
information on potential grants.
