Admissions
Shade Primary School follows the Calderdale Admission Policy. Full information about admission to schools
can be found using the link below.
http://www.calderdale.gov.uk/education/schools/admissions/primary-schools/index.html
Our school nursery has a separate Early Years Admission Policy (available on the Policies Page on our
website), which should be read alongside the Calderdale Early Years Policy. It is important to note that
admission to our Nursery does not guarantee a place in our reception class.
Our Nursery has 26 places available each morning and afternoon. Places are allocated to meet parents’
needs either part or full time. 5 sessions are funded and any further sessions taken are charged for. Children
can join our nursery from the start of the term after their third birthday. To register your child, arrange a
visit or for further information please contact our school office.
Admissions to reception class are administered by Calderdale Local Authority. The school has an admission
limit of 28. Children are admitted to reception class at the beginning of the school year (Sept 1st – Aug 31st)
in which their fifth birthday falls. Application packs are available from our school office or via the local
authority website (access via the link above).
Admission to other year groups – parents seeking a place should contact the school office in the first
instance to enquire about availability of places. We welcome visits to our school which can be arranged via
the school office.
Shade School is committed to equal opportunities. Admissions for pupils with disabilities are arranged with
full consultation with parents and external agencies to ensure the child’s needs can be fully met. Our school
office should be notified if any special requirements are needed to enable parents / family members to visit
school and / or access our information.

To encourage healthy lifestyles we encourage our children to walk, cycle or scoot to school. However, we
know this is not always possible. To reduce the number of vehicles parking outside school we provide a large
car park for parents to use when dropping off and collecting children. To encourage drivers to park away
from school a school crossing patrol is on duty at our Rochdale Road entrance. Children can use the Yellow
Bus Service, contact our school office for further information about transport to and from school.
During each session the children have an outdoor break and at lunchtime the children also spend time
outside as we believe that fresh air and exercise is important.
5
Assemblies are an important part of our day. Each Monday we award the Attendance Cup; we look at our
local community newspaper and celebrate achievements; we congratulate children who have brought in
certificates and, through a story, we reflect on aspects of our spiritual, moral and cultural development. Rev.
Owen, from St Mary’s Church in Todmorden, is also regular visitor to our assembly. Each Friday we celebrate
individual achievement in our Shield Assembly and class achievement by sharing good work. Depending on
the time of year we also celebrate special events, learn about festivals from a variety of faiths and support a
variety of charities.
We provide information leaflets on our website about our nursery and reception classes. There are also class
pages for additional information.

Each class is taught by their class teacher(s) and additional support is provided by teaching assistants.
Each week class teachers have 1 afternoon out of class to plan, prepare and carry out assessments (PPA
time).
For KS2 classes this is every Wednesday afternoon. The carousel of activities enriches the learning for our
children. Mrs Sutcliffe teaches IT skills and Mr Simpson teaches the music. As part of our drive to develop
our children’s health and fitness Mrs Townend teaches a variety of PE and dance and Mrs Barker develops
their artistic skills.
KS1 and R have Mrs Crothers teaching RE, Mrs Townend teaching a combination of dance, drama and
gymnastics and Mrs Simpson teaching music.
Curriculum
We follow the New Curriculum 2014 for England core and foundation subjects. Literacy is the core focus for
our creative curriculum plans. Foundation subjects are linked into our theme based approach. Some subjects
are taught discretely e.g. numeracy, PE, IT skills and some RE. Examples of our long term plans and creative
curriculum plans can be viewed on our website.
Further information about the Curriculum can be found on our website.

The Foundation Stage
‘The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) is the statutory framework that sets the standards that all Early
Years providers must meet to ensure that children learn and develop well and are kept healthy and safe. It
promotes teaching and learning to ensure children are ready for school and gives children the broad range
of knowledge and skills that provide the right foundation for good future progress through school and
life.’ Ref. DFE website
In our Foundation Stage our experienced practitioners use the statutory framework within their planning.
They provide stimulating activities to excite the children to learn and use Developmental Matters to track,
assess and plan for each child. We welcome visits to our provision, please contact us for more information.
Our class pages and newsletters on our website provide more information about our curriculum in action
Punctuality and Attendance
At Shade we value punctuality and good attendance. We open the school doors at 8.50am so that the
children can come into school and prepare for a prompt start at 9am. Children are the responsibility of their
parents or M and A club until 8.50 am and any children left earlier are done so at the parent’s discretion.
Staff are busy preparing for the day and are not responsible for your child until 8.50 am. We consider that
arriving after 9.10am is a late arrival into school and this is recorded on the school attendance register.
Regular late arrivals are followed up and support is offered to ensure children arrive for 9am.
We expect that children will attend school unless they are ill. Holidays in term-time are discouraged unless
there are exceptional circumstances resulting in authorisation at the discretion of the headteacher
Parents are expected to phone the school before 9am if their child is absent. This is important because we
need to know that if a child does not arrive at school s/he is safe at home because s/he is ill. We also need to
know why a child is ill so that we can monitor current health issues. If a child is absent our school office will
contact parents via text or phone.
Attendance is calculated weekly and measured against our 96.5% annual target. Attendance is celebrated in
our Monday whole school assembly. The highest attending class in each key stage is awarded a school
badge, 2 badges if 100% is achieved. At the end of each term the class with the highest number of badges is
awarded a class reward. Examples of recent rewards are a trip to a local farm, a picnic, a fun swim in our
pool.
School Uniform
Our uniform consists of grey or black trousers, skirt or pinafore dress; red (pillar box) jumper, sweatshirt or
cardigan and either red or white polo shirt. Uniform which bears the school logo can be purchased from our
school office or the items can be purchased without the logo from supermarkets or department stores.
The children should wear suitable footwear that provides support when running around on the playground
and heels, slingbacks and open-toed shoes should not be worn. The children play out in all weathers and
7
footwear should be suitable for the season / weather. Wellingtons or boots are essential in snowy weather
and a pair of shoes to change into, needs to be brought into school.
Jewellery should not be worn in school. Plain stud earrings are allowed and a watch. Earrings and watches
should be left at home on PE and swimming days.
Make-up, nail varnish and the use of hair gel are not allowed.
PE is an important part of our curriculum. Children need to have their PE kit in school during term time and
should take it home for washing each holiday. PE kit needs to be in a clearly named pump bag which can be
hung in the cloakroom area.
Our PE kit consists of a white, round necked T shirt and dark-coloured shorts. Children usually have bare feet
for indoor lessons and wear trainers for outdoor lessons. Clearly naming each item is essential please.
For PE earrings must be removed by the child or the child can bring plaster to cover the earrings. Long hair
must be tied back (boys and girls).
Swimming is also an important part of our curriculum and we are fortunate in having a pool on site. The
children need a towel and swimwear for lessons.
School book bags are also available from the school office. These are very useful for carrying reading books,
homework and pupil post.
School lunches
Our school lunches are popular. Lunches are cooked at Todmorden High School and transported to Shade.
We liaise regularly with Christine, the cook at THS, to ensure the children’s tastes are catered for. We serve a
main meat or fish dish with a vegetarian option and a pudding. We also have a salad bar. Wednesday is roast
dinner day; a firm favourite with children and staff. Children can order dinners by the week or just on some
days; some of our children choose whether to have a school lunch by checking out the menu on our website.
Children may prefer to bring a packed lunch. Lunches should be brought in a clearly named container with
drinks in a resealable plastic container. We encourage the children to bring a healthy selection of foods;
sweets and fizzy drinks are not permitted.
Foundation stage and key stage 1 children eat at 12 noon in our school hall. KS2 eat at 12.30pm.
Dinner money needs to be sent into school when meals are ordered, in a named envelope. Cheques should
be made payable to Shade Primary School.
If you would like advice about applying for free school meals please talk to our office staff, who have
application forms available.
8
Parents as partners
Parents are welcome into school. We believe that it is important to talk to us if you or your child has any
concerns. Our teachers accompany the children onto the playground at the end of the day, which enables
you to speak to them and arrange to come into school for a discussion. Appointments can also be made via
our school office. The start of the day is very busy but our teachers are available for any urgent issues.
Our Headteacher, Mrs Clarkson, is always happy to meet parents.
In September parents are invited to Class Welcome meetings to meet their child’s new teacher and find out
about the curriculum and routines for the year.
We hold two formal Parents’ Meetings; shortly after October and February half terms. In the summer term,
written reports are sent home and parents are given an opportunity to discuss their child’s report on Open
Afternoon.
Our fortnightly newssheets and half termly newsletters are packed full of information, (current and back
issues are available on our website). Each half termly issue contains a celebration of events over the last
weeks from a whole school and a class perspective; a report from the Clerk to Governors; a diary of events
for the rest of the term and beyond; important reminders; and news from the M and A Club and Parents’
Group. This year we have also introduced a section suggesting ways of supporting your child at home.
Between newsletters we send home flyers, usually on Mondays or Fridays, and messages / reminders via
text.
We also have a school website which is the place to go to for any information about what is going on in
school.
Volunteers In School
We welcome voluntary offers of help. Currently we have volunteers who listen to readers, support with
general classroom admin tasks, accompany our classes on trips, help with practical activities or who are
volunteering as part of a formal qualification.
We expect regular volunteers to complete a DBS check, a simple check that is required under our
safeguarding procedures.
Homework
Discussion with parents shows that some parents want set homework and some feel children should not
have set homework. Quite a number of our children attend clubs and activities beyond the school day that
enrich their education and personal development. We expect the children to read regularly at home and
practise times tables. They may also bring spellings home to learn. From Y2 to Y6 the children complete
Learning Logs at home. These are projects set by the teacher and the children complete research and
present their work in their preferred way e.g. models, handmade books, PowerPoint presentations,
embroidery, artwork.
9
Illness
When a child feels unwell at school we monitor them closely. If we feel they need to go home, we will
contact a parent and ask that the child is collected as soon as possible. For this reason it is important that we
are informed of any change in contact details. Parents who work some distance away can provide contact
details for another family member who could collect an unwell child.
If your child is prescribed medicine and is well enough to attend school this can be administered providing
that:


The medicine is brought to school by an adult and the correct form is completed from the school
office
The medication is in the container as dispensed by the pharmacist
A medicine spoon is provided
The medicine must be collected by an adult at the end of the day.
Any child with a specific medical need will have a Care Plan, written in conjunction with parents and our
school nurse or a specialist nurse. Parents should make school staff aware of child’s medical needs prior to
admission or as soon as the need arises.
If, as a result of an accident, your child needs to attend school with a temporary disability e.g. broken bone,
severe strain / sprain restricting mobility, it is essential that a risk assessment is completed and signed by
the parent before the child comes to school.
Extended Provision including extra curriculum
Shade Primary School offers full wrap around care from 7.30am to 6pm every school day and during school
holidays, except Bank holidays and between Christmas Day and New Year. This is provided by the M and A
Club, managed and run by Mrs N Naylor. Although Mrs Naylor is a private provider, we work very closely
with her and her team to ensure continuity of care for our children. The M and A Club team take the
Foundation Stage and KS1 children to their classrooms every morning and ensure the children are settled
before leaving them with their teacher. At the end of the day the team collects the younger children directly
from their classroom. Mrs Naylor welcomes visits to Club and you can either call in unannounced or ring
07795578118 to arrange to visit.
Our programme of extra-curricular activities varies throughout the year.
Dance and Gym Club takes place Wednesdays after school and is offered to different age-groups each half
term.
Drama club is on a Tuesday after school.
Christmas Art and Craft, for KS1 children, is held in the run up to Christmas.
Choir is for KS2 and takes place each Friday after school.
Football and netball run in the late spring and summer terms. These are for the upper juniors.
Private instrumental lessons are available through the Calderdale Music Hub.

Friends of Shade Parents and Teachers Association FOSPTA
Our Parents’ Group is always keen to welcome new members. The group meets regularly to arrange fund
raising events and social events for the children. In March 2012 Parents’ Group funds enabled school to
purchase a ‘new to us’ minibus. Currently Parents’ Group is raising money for outdoor improvements.
If the information you are seeking is not within this prospectus, or on our website, please contact us directly.
Our children and staff welcome visitors to the school so please arrange a visit to find out more about Shade
Primary School.
