October RTI Activities Theme: Pumpkins Week One Sight Word

October RTI Activities
Theme: Pumpkins
Week One
Sight Word Recognition
All: Pumpkin Memory. Review sight words learned thus far by having children read the words on the pumpkins. Turn over all
pumpkins, and have children take turns choosing two, reading the words, and deciding if they have made a match. Pairs can be
kept until all cards are eliminated.
Extension: Create sentences with known sight words and color words taught to this point. Place each word on a dicut pumpkin.
Place pumpkins in a baggie to keep the sentence together. Make multiple baggies of sentences. Remind the students that the
first word of a sentence begins with a capital and that there is punctuation at the end. Tell the students that the words are
mixed up and they have to put them back in order. Model: Place the word that is capitalized at the beginning and place the
word with punctuation at the end. Work to rearrange middle words. Give each student their own baggie of pumpkin words to
rearrange. Sentences are Halloween related. Students write their sentence on paper after rearranging.

Extension
Beginning/Ending Sound
All: “Feed the Pumpkin”. Needed: large pumpkin cut out. Pumpkins mouth should have a slot so that picture cards can be slid
through. Word “train” should be glued to the pumpkin. The teacher will use all letters taught until this point (S, M, R, T, N, P).
The teacher will place the desired letter under the engine of the train and ask the students to listen for words that begin
with that particular sound. Students will pull picture cards one person at a time. If their card begins with the letter, they get
to feed it to the pumpkin (place it in the slot).
Extension: These students will be alternating, listening for beginning and ending sounds throughout the whole game.
Letter Naming
All: Students will play a letter memory game. They are to match the capital and lower case letters of the taught letters (S,
M, R, T, N, P). While they turn over the cards, the students should say the name of the letter and the sound. After the first
round, more letters can be added into the game (A, B, C, D etc.)
Extension:: Begin with letters directly taught. Quickly add in more letters to the game. Ask students to name something that
begins with the letter they turn over.

Week Two
Sight Word Recognition: ”Pumpkin Soup”
All: The story “Pumpkin Soup” by Helen Cooper will be read in class before RTI stations occur.
In a cauldron, place “word pumpkins” (spray painted golf balls) which have sight words written on them. On the other side of
the golf ball is Velcro (so the balls don’t roll when placed on the plate).
Each student will have a “pumpkin plate”. Each plate has four different sight words written on it. The students are to use the
soup ladles to spoon out one word. The student is to say the word. If the word is on their plate they get to Velcro the
pumpkin onto the plate. First student to fill their plate “wins”.
Extension: Each student will have a “pumpkin plate”. Each pumpkin plate will have a written sentence. Teacher will discuss how
each sentence begins with a capital and ends with a period. The teacher will introduce new words to be used in this activity:
can, is, black, white. Each student will read their sentence to themselves. Students will use the soup ladle to spoon out a word.
If the word is a part of the sentence, they get to place it on their plate above the word it matches. First student to complete
their pumpkin sentence “wins”.
Beginning/Ending Sound
All: Begin with a pumpkin game board filled with spider rings. Draw a picture card from the pumpkin bucket, and name the
beginning sound. Place a spider ring into the correct sound cup. Object: to correctly name the sound and get ride of your
spider rings! A ring goes to everyone to keep at the end.
Extension: Ask students to listen for ending sounds also.
Letter Naming- Pumpkin Bean Bag Toss
All: Large pumpkin cut outs will be placed on the floor. Each pumpkin will have one of the directly taught letters written on
them (M,S,R,T,N,P,C). Students will reach into the pumpkin bucket and pull out a letter card. The student is to say the letter
card. If he/she can name the letter they can throw the pumpkin bean bags onto as many corresponding letters as they see on
the floor.
Extension: Students will be shown a sight word. He/she is to throw bean bags on to the dicut pumpkins of the corresponding
letters which spell the word. He/she can look at the card to help with the spellings or he/she may choose to do it on their
own. The must throw the bean bags on the letters in the order that they appear in the word.
